In itself a beautiful film that remains fascinating all the time, Eastwood knows how to make films. A not insignificant downside, however, is how unrealistic this story is, of course. The intention is of course that it is moving and you can see that coming, it can also be reasonably predicted. A fugitive, serious criminal who suddenly develops a soft spot for an eight-year-old boy he has taken hostage and as a result becomes completely soft again. Sounds very touching but of course it is as unreal as it can be. The title also says it a bit: "A Perfect World". It is fascinating and entertaining, so still 3.5* from me.

A perfect world is such a quintessential Eastwood. Very solid, quite qualitative and never disappointed. A perfect world for me is a nostalgic film, a film that I have seen many times in my youth and that has always moved me. Certainly not a perfect film, especially when you consider the limited time span of a few days, but it is a compelling film that lasts the entire ride.

The more than decent acting performances also play a part in this. Opinions are often divided about Kevin Costner, but here he delivers a cracking performance as a soft criminal who takes on the role of a father to a little one he kidnapped. Eastwood is the ideal gruff cop - Tommy Lee Jones would have been a good casting too. The film seems a bit outdated, with the "modern" caravan with all the gadgets making little impression today.

Butch radiates sympathy from viewer. He radiates a certain calm and warmth. He seems to be the missing father figure for Phillip. It produces a number of moving moments, especially when Phillip is walking around in a Casper suit. The fact that the film is a road movie is an added bonus. The ending is also strong and excellently portrayed, and also exciting. Benefit of the doubt to award 4.0*!

A collaboration between Costner and Eastwood, well I'd like to see that. It's a quiet drama about a criminal who basically kidnaps a child and then develops a special bond with it. This film could be shown in school as a good example of the Stockholm syndrome. There may not be very memorable scenes, but the simplicity makes it a good film. This time very little Clint in the film, so it's mainly Costner and the little "Buzz" who steal the show.

Maybe not the best film Eastwood has made, but this one is definitely worth seeing. However, the title does not appeal enough to make this film a true classic.
