Rocky plot

"His whole life was a million-to-one shot."

Rocky Balboa is a second-rate boxer from Philadelphia. He is a failure: he lives in a disused apartment and as a side job he is a debtor. He also tries to impress the somewhat shy Adrian, his great love. Then Rocky gets the chance of a lifetime when he gets to fight the world champion, Apollo Creed, for the world title through a publicity stunt. Rocky is determined to make it through 15 rounds, not only for his confidence, but also so he can prove he's not some bum on the street.

"I just want to say hi to my girlfriend, OK? Yo, Adrian! It's me, Rocky."

Very very good movie!! A bit of the same concept as The Karate Kid. John G. Avildsen is without a doubt one of the greatest directors to ever walk the planet! Unfortunately I am one of the only ones who thinks so and his films are very underrated.

Sylvester Stallone in his younger days. He plays well I must say and this is without a doubt the best thing he has worked on in his entire career. And he not only plays the lead role but also wrote the story, I never thought that such a good story could come out of his brain. Also good performances from Talia Shire, Burt Young, Carl Weathers, Thayer David and I also really liked Burgess Meredith as Mickey, I already knew him as Ammon in Clash of the Titans or the narrator of Zwilight Zone: The Movie. Also funny is that the dog that plays Butkus is actually called Butkus Stallone and is Sylvester's dog.

Bill Conti's music is magnificent! Together with those of The Karate Kid and Masters of the Universe, it really is his best work.

The movie has a very good story. For a film about boxers there is a lot of depth and drama. You also don't have to be a fan of boxes to follow the film. Especially the relationship between Rocky and Adrian I found a very original and good turn in the story.

All in all, a really good movie (a shame it's not in MM's top 250!). I think The Karate Kid is a bit better on the one hand because I like martial arts more and Pat Morita is just awesome but on the other hand this one is better so I'll keep it as a draw. I also really liked the ending. The movie isn't cliche at all, Rocky doesn't win! I think that's just as beautiful. It's not about winning.

Very good movie. Shame on anyone who hasn't seen him yet.

This year we started again with a review of the Rocky series. The last time I saw them must have been about ten years ago. However, this first Rocky movie is still fresh in my memory. One of the few films that I have awarded with a maximum score and after 10 years nothing has changed. Everything is just right: the story, the characters, the music and the atmosphere. The series then took a different turn by focusing more on the spectacle of the final battle and less on the characters. Rocky is and remains an unadulterated classic in my eyes.

My girlfriend turns out to be a huge fan of this. So reconsider. Despite the fact that I didn't remember it as a brilliant film, it wasn't easy unfortunately. First of all, the film looks very old (and of course it is). And the plot isn't very exciting either. Lots of talk, especially by the main character who isn't exactly eloquent, furthermore a romance that starts in a way that is no longer acceptable. Given how they really get into a relationship, we'll assume it's all by mutual consent, but it doesn't feel very natural.

The most famous scene is of course the montage scene leading up to the stairs in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which is also one of the most famous montage scenes in film history. It didn't bother me the first time I saw the film; it bothers me even less now.

Besides the wooden romance, boxing feels like an afterthought. One of the main motivations of the main character seems to be not to make a mistake against the world champion, but when push comes to shove, little attention is paid to it during the match.

And so it's not entirely clear to me where people really want to go with this film. Is it the pursuit of the American dream? Fulfilling your potential? What it is exactly, I don't get excited about it unfortunately. 1*.
