The beginning is a bit ugly, with a minute-long repetition of what I had just seen. I was getting a little annoyed, until it occurred to me that in 1979 no one had ever heard of a VCR, so it had been about a year or so. Not so strange to give a refresher then.

The story is a bit more mature than the first part, and besides that also a better and more balanced film. Although boxing does suffer a bit from that. And it introduces another element that, as an inseparable part of American culture, was somewhat lacking in Part 1 - faith. Fortunately, it is not very thick, but still.

Rocky 2. I knew very little about this and for a moment I even doubted whether I had ever seen the film. But the fight and the staggering steps at the end seemed familiar to me.

Again not an excess of fights, but an unsympathetic challenger this time, and again it is mainly about life outside the ring and the problems that come with it. Rocky wants to take life in a different direction, but most of all, it's blunt. Meager jobs with meager salaries, a woman who is pregnant, a challenger who calls Rock for everything and bystanders who all say the same thing; go back into the ring, something where multiple hazards are connected.

The character itself tends to a caricature with his walk, with his 'Yo' and 'know what I mean?', and other mannerisms at a certain point and sometimes I also have to put aside some annoyance. Yet it is all not entirely uninteresting and the story around all concerns is slightly more fascinating and mature than the first Rocky. It is therefore waiting for the fiat from wife to continue with the training and run-up to the fight, recognizable of course. The slugfest that follows is funny but substantively dumber than dumb. Coverage? Trained in a different way to protect his right eye? Sounds nice huh. No, Rocky's head is more like a punching bag than good boxing technique.

Oh, it's not all great. Entertaining though. The run around the market with the children is touching, and as usual Meredith is well again as an expired coach. The end result is nice for once and certainly no worse than the first Rocky as far as I'm concerned.
