Almost all on her own, against all odds and at the risk of her own life and property, Margaret has reunited thousands of families, denounced the authorities and exposed an extraordinary miscarriage of justice worldwide.

What an intense true story. I liked the storytelling, and tears are appropriate in such a sad story, although I found it a bit too sentimental at times. Then it felt too played. Visually, I think it looks good. Bright. Emily Watson plays a strong, vulnerable role as far as I'm concerned. Better movie than expected. A 7. 3.5*

Straightforward biographical and historical drama about the attempts of social worker Margaret Humphreys [Emily Watson] who discovers in the early 1980s that the British government had placed children in shelters in other Commonwealth countries under false pretenses. These children often knew nothing about their family and often grew up in terrible circumstances where many of them were victims of slavery and/or sexual abuse. Humphrey's open criticism of the government produces strong emotional reactions that make her research and her work increasingly difficult. The title refers to the light-hearted promises with which the children were reassured. Watson is excellent in the lead role, but Loach ensures that the fate of the victims always remains central.

Sometimes I get a bit fed up with these kinds of movies. It's hard to think it's bad, because of the real social and human drama. But as far as I'm concerned, that comes into its own better in a news report or perhaps a documentary.
