Very nice film, although the story remains a bit on the surface. The film is actually about the development that the prison guard goes through from brutal racist to an admirer of Mandela. The story is based on his memoirs and I expected his personal development to be a bit more in-depth.

Still more than worth it, but that may be because I consider Mandela to be the greatest personality of the last fifty years. I have a huge admiration for this man.

Excellent film again from Bille August. This time he tells the story of a prison guard played by Joseph Fiennes. It is remarkable how his youth looks at the Kaffirs differently and how this translates into his dealings with Nelson Mandela. The wife of Joseph Fiennes is played by Diane Kruger and although her role has little substance, she plays very well.

It is a bit of a shame that the film gives too little background about what happened before Robben Island. Now that I have seen four films by Bille August, I notice that less obvious friendships are a recurring theme, as in 55 Steps. Or that enemies eventually got a kind of respect/sympathy like Javert and Valjean in Les Miserables. Also in The House of the Spirits, Jeremy Irons eventually puts his political ideology aside to save Antonio Banderas. Goodbye Bafana is of course slightly political, but there is more than enough attention for the less politically engaged film viewer.
