Shirley Valentine plot

"No one thought she had the courage, the nerve, or the lingerie."

Shirley is a middle-aged woman living in Liverpool. Her life has few nice moments anymore, and she has mainly become her husband's domestic help. She muses a lot about what her life could have looked like differently. When her friend wins a trip to Greece, Shirley decides to come along and go on a trip without her husband. Once there, she visibly improves and begins to enjoy life again, not least because of her encounters with a passionate Greek.

Reasonable film about a middle-aged British housewife who gets the chance to go on holiday to Greece. The main character is well portrayed and Pauline Collins is well cast. The breaking of the fourth wall sometimes gets a bit boring and the humour is a bit stale, but otherwise it is a nice film.

A nice film with a somewhat predictable story that could take place in reality, were it not that we often fail to pursue our goals and, unfortunately, often do not dare to do so either, "what might others think of that".

So we often live someone else's life instead of our own! ☹️

Shirley Valentine (Pauline Collins) is a bored housewife. She doesn't just break the 'fourth wall'; she actually talks to the wall. Her husband Joe has become cold and lives according to a rigid routine, and not much is left of her old friends. They have been left alone after their son Brian—a penniless poet—and daughter Millandra left home. Her friend Jane, a divorced feminist, wins two plane tickets to Greece and takes Shirley along.

At school, she dreamed of becoming a flight attendant, but she was constantly discouraged by the principal. She became a rebel and was jealous of her rival Marjorie Majors, the good girl of the class. As adults, they meet again, which leads to surprising revelations. She argues with Joe and her daughter. Once on the plane, Jane leaves her for a man. She meets Costas (Tom Conti), the owner of a local bar. (big rascal )

The film is based on a play for a single actress, and therefore revolves entirely around that one woman. Everything rests on the shoulders of Pauline Collins, and she delivers a magnificent performance. She commands the screen; she is charming, funny, and a woman of flesh and blood. Some of the supporting characters are somewhat caricatured. There are a few moments that are laugh-out-loud funny, but above all, it is the humanity of Pauline Collins that makes the film shine.

A beautiful film with a beautiful homecoming, adequate, a 7+!
