I think I haven't seen enough Malmros. I only had this one, along with a short (well, about 40 minutes) short film from a few years later. And it was engaging cinema. Unfortunately, no nice new copies, but it was watchable.
One of Malmros's great strengths is that, in order to portray the children's world in his films very credibly, he practically never brings adults into the picture. The two films I saw were precisely about the world you live in as a child, of which the parents know little to nothing. The hierarchy in the classroom or among a group of friends. The changing relationships between them. The tension that slowly emerges at that age (in both films, the children are around 11 years old). For example, between boys and girls. Not the first filmmaker I've seen do something like this, but well done.
