Elementarteilchen plot

Michael and Bruno are half brothers and polar opposites. While their mother Jane led a carefree jet-set life, the boys grew up with their respective grandmothers. Michael, an introverted molecular biologist, is more attracted to genetics research than to women. Bruno, on the other hand, is obsessive about sex. Unexpectedly, both brothers meet the love of their lives. Michael sees an old school friend again and Bruno comes across Christiane at an esoteric holiday camp, who proves receptive to his obsession.

The casting of the two leads is not ideal; Moritz Bleibtreu plays a bit too forced and Christian Ulmen is a bit too passive, but apart from that, this is a beautiful film about two brothers who deal with a midlife crisis in different ways. Often quite explicit, both visually and in terms of language, but fortunately nowhere vulgar and often very funny. From the moment the beautiful Franka Potente and Martina Gedeck come into the picture, the film also gets better and better.

Two half-brothers, but also two huge opposites. The contrast could hardly be greater. Both socially awkward when it comes to relationships and women, yet so different. Michael is the nerd on duty, the wimp of the two who makes few social contacts with the opposite sex. He has even lost sight of his childhood girlfriend through his own doing.

Bruno, on the other hand, is more the prototype of a frustrated and obsessed forty-something who comes across as perverted and inappropriate. Unlikable character from start to finish. A narcissist, a self-pitying person...

It is a bit forced at times, but I still found the story entertaining. The budding loves after halfway were fascinating, but I also felt they were not heavy or deep enough to really touch me. Agree with Wibro that the photo scene was the most beautiful and sensitive part of the film. The acting also made up for a lot, even the small supporting roles such as Corinna Harfouch's as doctor Schäfer were fine.

Another movie that I saw years ago, but then I didn't review everything.

Houellebecq's book was very interesting and essentially a further exploration of De Wereld van Markt en Strijd, with the common subject being the bitter legacy of the sexual revolution of the late 1960s, which turned the sexual market into a harsh jungle and the cohesion of families and more traditional structures. "Atomised" is a great concise English translation of what's at stake here.

This film adaptation is fairly faithful, although a lot of observations are missing in the typically essayistic novel for Houellebecq. The film adaptation of that earlier book (Extension du domaine de la lutte) did do a lot of voice overs, which worked fine. The colors are very bright and kitschy, what a pity. However, many scenes do manage to capture the essence of the book. Well played, especially the intense Bleibtrau I always really like, here he is a sexually frustrated teacher who didn't get enough affection. Well, empathy from writer Houellebecq, I always thought that was the strong point of his books, you could empathize with it. Fortunately, this is preserved in the film. I found the interaction between the selfish mother and her autistic son who typically has difficulty with physical contact funny.

Definitely recommended for anyone who also found the book interesting.
