"Every second of every day you're faced with a decision that can change your life."

Manni has exchanged a consignment of contraband for a bag of money that he has to deliver to his 'boss' Ronnie. In return, he gets a percentage. Manni gets on the subway but panics when police appear in the same carriage. During his flight he realizes that he has left the bag of money in the subway car. A bum finds the bag and runs off with it. Totally upset, Manni calls his girlfriend Lola. She has only 20 minutes to conjure up the missing money. The girl starts a race against time to save her friend from certain death. Lola decides to go to her father, who works at a bank.

Lola Rennt

Fantastic movie. So you see what you can do with few resources. A strong vision from the director, an inventive story, original visuals and of course the incomparable Franka Potente, that's all you need. It seems to be a pretty straight forward story, but because of the fast editing and animation you quickly know that you are dealing with a special film.

And then there are the alternative timelines. Lola Rennt has a short playing time and every second counts and is used. The casino scene, the banking everywhere (the film also has humor), but also the calm and reddish intermezzos between Lola and Manni (Bleibtrue)… Everything is right. And everything is supported by uplifting music that gives the film its own vibe. A movie like Lola Rennt is unique and should be cherished. Everyone watch this movie.

The fast editing, the hyperkinetic atmosphere and the excited electronic music are in keeping with the youth culture of the 1990s. Franka Potente looks athletic, rebellious and fiery with her dyed hair. Moritz Bleibtreu has more blocked energy. There is almost constant movement, although there are a few moments of standing still, such as when the door slows down.

There is a philosophical theme in it: the different possible realities. The butterfly effect means that one small event can cause a completely different future. Here we see three different realities in succession. In contrast to Sliding Doors (1998), they chose for three realities with a completely different ending, so not predestination but contingency. In between there are some photo shots with a possible future of a secondary character. There are also two flashbacks as an interlude, where the two main characters are lying in bed together, lit by a red light. One interpretation is that only these interludes really happen; that the rest is fantasy. The fact that Lola wins twice in a row at the casino makes that third version look like a fantasy. She wins with the number 20, not coincidentally the number of minutes she has to collect the money. There are also comedic moments, such as with that bum and with that window that may or may not be smashed. You can experience the result like an express train that you get on, but it can also prompt reflection.

Excellent print with a fine original slant. And by original I don't necessarily mean that it's the very first movie to use the timeloop concept , but the approach is 'pleasantly clumsy'. The acting is not that great and somehow that fits into the picture. The editing, animation, camera work and techno-light score is so hip and flashy that it may feel a bit forced, but it works. Just like the choice of style takes precedence over logic (take a bike or subway instead of running, be clear to your father, why run/stand in the middle of the road).
It's actually quite a crazy movie. Sometimes it feels like a graduation project, but it still feels original and bites away very well.
