"Der Untergang" would of course also be a great title here, because that's what the film is about: the decline of Professor Rath and his sad ending. Atmospheric film with appropriate, sometimes expressionistic-looking sets. And as for the acting: it was one of the first sound films, so perhaps that's why it's turned on a bit more theatrical than we're used to now, but I thought it was appropriate for that colorful ensemble. A nice window into a time that will never come back.

Beautiful film, it touched me when few do. Especially the scene where Dietrich sings her famous song 'Ich bin von Kopf...', and Dr. Rath is drunk with love (and with absynth?). The only thing that bothered me was that all the outside noise disappeared when doors and windows were slammed shut, but I just read here that it's one of the first sound films.

The first sound film by Marlene Dietrich that I mainly knew from many later films in the late 1950s, early 1960s. Der Blaue Engels is much more than just 'a film by Marlene Dietrich'. The big star of the movie is actually Emil Jannings as the professor. Dietrich isn't bad, of course. She knows how to enchant the viewer as a femme fatale with her role as Lola Lola.

The film itself takes some getting used to. Almost 100 years old and made in the early days of silent film. You notice that in the acting style, which not only we but also the actors undoubtedly had to get used to. Dietrich soon found her way into it. Emil Jannings is a man of the old cinema. It does fit his role. And especially in the 2nd half he plays Dietrich all the way home and I myself became silent for a while about his character who radiates so much pain. He doesn't need dialogue at all for that. Jannings is also the 1st actor ever to win an Oscar and then for 2 films. He should have been nominated for this role from me.
