Branagh's take on Belfast in 1969 is a bizarre mix of sentimental family drama and political thriller. Even if you could justify that from the point of view of Buddy [Jude Hill], a child who is not yet sufficiently aware of the implications of the bitter struggle between Protestants and Catholics in his neighborhood, there is no reason why Branagh so often falls back on musical interludes (often with music recorded well (sometimes very well) after 1969) after yet another unconvincing showdown between Buddy's father [Jamie Dorman] and Billy Clanton [Colin Morgan], who demands that everyone takes sides and joins the fray. Beautifully filmed, but otherwise there is very little to enjoy.

A nostalgic throwback to director Kenneth Branagh's childhood. That it is a retrospective becomes immediately clear after the transition from color to black and white. The fragmentary structure of the film also contributes to this, some scenes are completely separate from the story and seem to be based mainly on specific memories of Branaghte. But it is precisely these scenes that bring a smile to the face. Often supported by the comforting sounds of Van Morrison, they show the youthful innocence of Buddy in the midst of a world full of chaos and uncertainty.

The screenplay is just too messy for a really high score, but Belfast is a film with its heart in the right place that I thoroughly enjoyed. 4*

Didn't really have a clue what to expect, but turned out to be a wonderful movie. In fact, I should have given this one the Oscar instead of Coda.

Obviously made with a lot of love and there is really nothing wrong with it. Beautiful time image of this specific neighborhood in Belfast, very atmospheric, beautifully filmed and played and beautiful (although well-known) music by Van Morrison.

Very successful.
