Stockholm plot

"Based on an absurd but true story"

Stockholm, 1973. Lars Nystrom robs a bank and takes some people hostage to get his friend out of prison. However, the negotiations stall and hours quickly turn into days, in which Lars also shows his caring side. This creates a bizarre bond between hostage taker and hostages, especially Bianca, a mother of two. Gradually, the hostages begin to sympathize with their captors. It even goes so far as to want to protect them and turn them against the police.

Reasonable film in which two bank robbers take a few people hostage to get what they want. Even though this film is based on the original story where the term 'Stockholm syndrome' comes from, it can no longer be called original and better films have been made. It is easy to watch and Ethan Hawke and Noomi Rapace do well, but as a whole it fails to impress.

The term Stockholm Syndrome originated from a 1973 incident that (obviously) took place in Stockholm. Lars Nystrom [Ethan Hawke] holds the workers in a slum hostage in Stockholm and demands the release of Gunnar Sorensson [Mark Strong], a sum of money and safe conduct. Negotiator Mattsson [Christopher Heyerdahl] tries to calm things down and slow things down, while Lars kills time by talking to bank employee Bianca Lind [Noomi Rapace], with whom he shares, among other things, a love of Bob Dylan. Hawke is excellent in a difficult role that requires him to be both sympathetic and menacing, and Rapace is convincing as the victim who gradually comes to sympathize with her captor.

Entertaining, often funny film about a true bank robbery in Stockholm in 1973. The theme, namely the Stockholm syndrome that apparently owes its name to this event, is absolutely not brought to life, but apart from that this is a smooth, nicely acted (especially Ethan Hawke is on a roll) and attractively designed light work. The events are sporadically reminiscent of Dog Day Afternoon, although that is much better. Christopher Heyerdahl, as police chief Mattson, is hilarious.
