"All she wanted was a little attention"

Burger bitch Suzanne Stone and the emigrated Italian Larry Maretto meet each other during a concert. It seems love at first sight and the couple decides to get married. A satire on media-hungry America disguised as a crime comedy. Typical Van Sant, with a unique storytelling style through interviews and flashbacks. Kidman plays a manipulative bitch who concocts a dirty plan with three naive teenagers . Dillon no longer plays the bad boy like he used to (Rumble Fish, Outsiders) but is a real conventional slipper hero. The film also stands out for its cast, with a young Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck in early roles. Also surprised by the appearance of David Cronenberg in a cameo. But it's Nicole Kidman, here at her sexiest, who steals the show, even though she plays a character you quickly hate. Hard to rate this film but a 3 seems more than enough.

A really captivating and amusing start with the comments about the young lovers and the apparent resolute confidence of the main character is also made clear quickly and playfully.

Then the film sinks a bit to add a classic criminal sequel in the last part.

There is decent acting in this mediocre to good film by Dillon, Phoenix.... but especially by Nicole Kidman, who perfectly fills her vixen role.

Humor and tension often go well together. This crime comedy is a satire on commercial cable television and the sensational reporting of the 1990s. Think of OJ Simpson's live chase and attempts to make the weather forecast fun and sexy.

Jumping back and forth in time is well thought out. The setting takes the form of a hip true crime documentary with reactions from witnesses and with Nicole Kidman breaking through the fourth wall. In the quick opening montage we see ice cream foreshadowing, the symbolic place name Little Hope, the media frenzy surrounding the funeral, and a newspaper article.

Visually there are nice finds in it. Suzanne sees her husband through an imaginary loop. There are crosscuts between the murder and the weather forecast, which serves as an alibi. The weather lady's eyes seem to prompt Jimmy to pull the trigger. When Janice faints, a TV voice yells, "Wake up!" The image of Suzanne under the ice has something magical about it.

Nicole Kidman showcases her talent for comedy and an arsenal of facial expressions in her role as the narcissistic, media-hungry career chaser. There are beautiful side roles for Alison Folland as the chubby, insecure teenager; for Wayne Knight as the puffy, seasoned producer of regional television; and for Dan Hedaya with his baseball bat. The real star is of course the dog, a West Highland white terrier.
