It's December again, and the world is once again teeming with lighthearted romantic comedies with a Christmas theme. These are easily predictable, interchangeable films. Single All the Way (that title alone) is a similar story. The only thing special about the film is that the couple, destined for each other but who must first overcome all sorts of obstacles to come to that realization, is gay. This deviation from the norm doesn't make the film any better. Single All the Way is a mediocre film.

I always do it to myself. In December, I watch one or two Christmas movies. Call it a tradition, I suppose. They're usually disappointing. Often, they're dripping with saccharine sweetness. Often, the humor is lacking. Often, the characters are far removed from realistic characters. Often, cheap tricks are used to evoke feelings of emotion and bliss. I recognize all of those things in this film. Sometimes I'm susceptible to them. Most of the time, I'm terribly annoyed.

Watching this film, the sugarcoated sentiments just wouldn't sink in. The story is pointless and runs on autopilot. Every ounce of creativity is missing. Apparently, the creator thought it was creative enough to center his film around a male couple and simply flesh out the rest of the story. Very boring. Very easy. Very meaningless. Very standard.

Maybe "Single All the Way" is the beginning of a series of throwaway comedies for the LGBT community. Fine. Then they'll be fully included. I don't think it's a step forward.

A Christmas movie as it should be: easy to digest without too many major problems. The chemistry between the leads is good, and that makes the fairy tale almost seem real. The fact that no one bats an eye at gay people, even in a small community, is remarkable, but a nice bonus.

Like many Christmas movies, I find most Christmas movies very cheesy. They're full of cliches, very predictable, and also full of stereotypes. This film is no exception. Because most Christmas movies are about straight couples, this one, for a change, is about a gay couple. Don't expect a masterpiece, and you can't be too disappointed. But because I still managed to laugh a few times, the lighthearted Christmas romance in this film succeeded.
