Meh.

Not that I'm the biggest Rob Reiner fan, far from it, but he can usually do better. However, the result is not up to scratch and the film feels as if the director actually had no desire to make this kind of film. Everything runs on autopilot.

The characters are stale and dusty, the actors don't seem to feel like it and the dialogues are very angular and predictable. Then some romantic nature pictures and some decorated festivities Reiner must have thought, but even that hardly knows how to charm.

A movie without a face. It bolts on for 90 minutes, it follows the established path and during the credits it is already digging far to remember something from the beginning. It's not an extremely annoying film, but one that doesn't show much movie fun. A very mediocre snack in other words.

A film that presents itself as the sequel to a classic from the 60's. That's a very cheap trick to sell this dragon of a movie.

Although I could smile at Shirley Maclaine (mainly because I initially thought she was Charlie & Alan's mother from Two and a Half Men ), the film was otherwise neither funny nor catchy.

Main ingredient and also tragic low point is the series of scenes Aniston and Costner share with each other. It never comes to pass. At no point did I understand why the characters did what they did. I couldn't empathize, while the film seems to assume that the viewer can.

Yes, and then it completely derails in terms of experience, so that you can only yearn for the credits.

The term 'nothing little' is appropriate here, because this is such a typical film that you almost completely forget after a few weeks. The film starts by introducing some hysterical characters and I was already done with it at that point, but luckily the down-to-earth roles of Jennifer Aniston and especially Shirley MacLaine manage to straighten that out. Both actually bring a smile here and there.

Then the focus is on Kevin Costner. Not uninteresting in itself, but a bit… strange. I didn't quite believe the impulsive attraction Sarah feels for someone who could have been her father five minutes ago. It all feels a bit wrong and, despite that's the intention, it works so little on the laughter muscles that it remains a bit uncomfortable.

Then there's a somewhat dubious supporting role by Mark Ruffalo that doesn't add very much... It's really just not it all. The film is not boring, but in no way stands out in the least. Perhaps being familiar with and appreciating The Graduate, a film that I have now become curious about, will make you feel a little more involved with this film.
