"Friendship doesn't have an off switch"

The story is set in the near future and is about the sixties Frank (Langella), who leads a withdrawn and lonely life due to his early Alzheimer's. His children have little time to visit their father and his only outing is to the library for charming employee Jennifer (Susan Sarandon). When Frank's health deteriorates, his son (James Marsden) decides to install a robot to take care of him. This is the beginning of an unlikely friendship.

Robot & Frank has its moments, but in general it is nothing special. The story itself is interesting and offers more than enough material, only the execution (the humor, the drama, the characters, ...) is rather dull.

The cast is decent, just a shame that most of the characters are quite "forgettable". Positive are Frank Langella (Frank) and James Marsden (son Hunter), while Susan Sarandon only serves as filler; what a waste. Liv Tyler (daughter Madison) should have been cut out of course and let's not talk about Jeremy Strong (neighbor Jake).

But the biggest downside to Robot & Frank is the ending. Apparently the film initially takes such a long run to tell the story that they decide to increase the tempo ten steps in the end. And what then follows is a strong piece of ragged gossip. In no time there is the burglary, the police passing by, the nursing home, ... and the film is over. The End.

There is something in the story of the old man with his robot, who can do much more than just a kitchen and garden helper.

To say that the film fully lives up to expectations would not be correct. Our Frank's reluctant attitude towards the arrival of the thing and unexpected turnaround are quite funny, but afterwards it's not exactly worked out well. It gets hard to really get into the story and when the kids start taking up roles it gets watered down even more and the possibly subtlety disappears into the plot for a few crazy scenes that aren't exactly funny and successful.

Frank Lagella is really deserving and also Susan Sarandon, in her supporting role.

Frank [Frank Langella] is a middle-aged former thief who has become so forgetful that his children worry about him. Partly because of Frank's helpful attitude, his son Hunter [James Marsden] can no longer afford to spend 10 hours every week in the car to help his father. So he decides to buy a care robot [voiced by Peter Sarsgaard] to help Frank lead a healthy and active life. Frank is initially not happy with this forced help, but after a while he discovers that the robot can be very useful to him in alternative activities.

A smart comic drama that responds to the current development of robots, which are expected to take over care tasks on a large scale in the future. The makers clearly see that as a positive development, but there is no sentiment whatsoever here. The development of the relationship (or is it friendship) between Frank and Robot is worked out in a credible way and screenwriter Christopher Ford clearly prefers humor over sentiment. Sarsgaard gives a voice rendition that is regularly reminiscent of Hal-500, but it is Frank Langella who carries the film with a well-balanced rendition. The result is very entertaining.
