Lily is the type of wallflower who remains incomprehensibly faithful to the indifferent world that surrounds her. It's just not all about her. Wrong dress, wrong walk, wrong words. The culmination of her monotonous days behind the counter at a fast food chain is the daily order from Jarrod, a socially ailed but self-confident salesman. Like her, he has a small birthmark above his upper lip and Lily is convinced that this connects them in a special way. Although Jarrod isn't interested in the timid Lily, she still ends up in his life when she's willing to take him back to his hometown. Arriving here, Jarrod just wants to finally give the boy who used to bully him some cotton.

Such an awkward tragicomedy is of course nothing new. In fact, at the beginning of the millennium we were pretty much thrown to death with shy wallflowers, dysfunctional family members and indy pop rock on the soundtrack. Eagle vs Shark is far from the best known in the genre, but it is one of the nicest.
It's especially nice that Taika Waititi doesn't make it all too heavy. There's drama, but it's all fairly light-hearted. Many of his characters are likeable and even touching (the relationship between Lily and her brother was fantastic, I would have liked to see more of that), while protagonist Jarrod is an asshole. But a sympathetic bastard, yes. Waititi knows what to do with all these colorful characters. It is also noticeable that he plays with different types of humor; sometimes it is quite over the top and wonderfully bland, other times it is subtle and quiet; also a mix that works great. And that mix is Eagle vs Shark in a nutshell; mainly very witty, very stylish and sometimes very beautiful and moving.

Nice review.
It is especially striking that this film masters the dramatic formula perfectly. Many of those films never manage to find the right balance between comedy and drama, so that both genres rarely come into their own. Waititi succeeds wonderfully in that.
With a bunch of great actors (both Clement and Horsley), plenty of witty humor, a few hilarious scenes, but also a lot of heart and soul. The fun stop motion scenes help, but it's mainly the characters who manage to find a perfect mix of silliness and depth.
Strong first film by Waititi, the start of a very nice career. Reviewing Eagle vs Shark was just as fun as the first time, the movie has barely aged (and the bits that have aged - like that computer gag - just got even more fun).

Nice film about a woman who works in a fast food restaurant and has a crush on a customer. Pretty dry humor and somewhat eccentric characters. This directorial debut by Taika Waititi reminded me a little too often of the somewhat better Napoleon Dynamite. As a whole, it is just a bit too small for 3.5 stars.
