Dogma plot

"It can be Hell getting into Heaven"

Two angels banished from heaven think they have found a way to return to heaven. Their plan will have the effect of destroying everything that God has ever created. The 13th Apostle Rufus (never described in the Bible because he is black) enlists the help of the last descendant of Christ (who works in an abortion clinic) to prevent this.

Some kind of milestone. This film is the last in which Ben Affleck stays just below the irritation line.

Quite a fun movie actually. A bit campy, it very much bears the atmosphere of a group of friends that made a short film over the weekend. I like the humor, and the characters are mostly quite nice - although some are just a little too carried away. Salma Hayek, come to mind then. Jay & Silent Bob are very nice though. And Linda Fiorentino is a beautiful centerpiece, nice and dry in her texts and with a perfectly matching delivery.

The joke at the end is a bit old if you're not seeing the movie for the first time. But Alanis remains a very good choice for that role.

“Good Lord, the little stoner's got a point.”

Kevin Smith's best film, but it still doesn't rise above mediocrity. Dogma has some good jokes and I especially appreciated Linda Fiorentino's dry comments. Just like the unparalleled role of Alan Rickman. But for the rest, the film lacks sharpness and it is also far too long. The critique of faith does yield a number of successful scenes and dialogues, and fortunately there is no moralizing message. It wouldn't have fit in this movie either.

Another nice video from Kevin Smith... Yes... you can make up endless things about faith to make fun of it. So that's what he did here. The humor worked well, sometimes it became nice and adolescent and the range of actors here also has a great added value. Matt Demon and Ben Affleck as clumsy angels who deal with the so-called blasphemy on the earth. Linda Fiorentino as a depressed woman who has just had an abortion (a sin) and then Chris Rock who has fallen from the sky through the past... Those two "dudes" already stole the show.

And so the film is a funny sequence of crooked lessons about religion and many adolescent jokes. That shit demon for example... but also knows how to let go of his charms here and there. Sometimes it looks a bit like a road movie, then like a small action movie, but most of the time it's just an extremely bland comedy that still works reasonably well.

3.5*
