Clerks. plot

"Just because they serve you doesn't mean they like you."

Dante has a tedious job in a store. He is still crazy about his high school sweetheart Caitlin, but he is now in a serious relationship with Veronica. The film follows the two during one working day, full of interesting events.

"37?!"

This is still a very nice film to watch again. The first time I saw him, he didn't do much for me, but after watching a few times, the penny dropped, and now he's high in my top 10. The acting isn't everything, as is the editing, but the gives the film that do-it-yourself mentality that radiates enormous charm. The nihilistic 90s atmosphere has been nicely struck, partly thanks to the coarse-grained black-and-white images and the rocking music of decent bands. Conversations that go nowhere, just like the lives of these main characters. Hanging out, having a crappy job, music, hockey and some drugs... The life of a few young people in New Jersey. Nice time frame, very funny too, but most of all very relaxed to watch how two boys try to get their lives on track and after a number of hardships finally prove to be able to take responsibility for their aimless lives .

The first Smith.

It must have made a different impression when it came out. Meanwhile, Smith has regularly repeated this kind of humor and when you see those films, you basically see them all. Clerks is a little less ambitious than many of Smith's other projects, and it can draw both advantages and disadvantages from that.

An advantage is that it is all nicely simplistic. It should make you laugh and much more it tries not to. Through a number of bizarre situations, Smith presents his comedy in a raw way, but that must have had to do with the limited budget. Actually, I found the background surrounding this film a lot more interesting than the film itself.

Acting is pretty bad, a lot of jokes don't quite come through. In addition, the film stretches itself very long, while the running time is not even that ridiculously long. It feels quite like a sketch as a whole, but as with real skits, I find that these lose their effect after a maximum of 30 minutes. Clerks is no different in that regard. After a while you've seen it all.

There is still a kind of common thread through the story, but otherwise it has mainly become an unpretentious comedy film. It's entertaining and there's enough going on not to let it drop dead, but it's also a film in which you can neatly walk to the toilet in between without missing anything essential. Half mark for half the work. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes not at all.
