Still a strange parody. At the beginning of the film you have to deal with the many crazy characters and the wonderful 50s vibe, but the film is not so absurd that you realize that this is a parody of films like Grease. This makes the story a bit simplistic and the characters are much too easily influenced, but once after the fight, the brakes are released.

One absurd scene after another passes by, culminating in the children's home, where the kids have to sell themselves to adoptive parents in cubes. Very nice done.

It's a shame that the absurd didn't come out so well right from the start, which caused minor irritations.

Later in the film, I was able to let it go more easily and enjoy the many silly things being conjured up on the screen.

A few sparingly fun moments, otherwise a nice 'great-quiff' atmosphere with the cars and the music, and that Amy Locane is quite acceptable, but otherwise too much musical with enthusiastic dancing people on the street and so on...and let I now really hate musicals and hysterical stuff about it.

Okay.

In any case, this is the first John Waters film that I can cross out. Despite this director's famed status, I've never had one of his films on my screen. Mainly because these didn't really show up on television, but also because his earlier films don't really appeal to me.

The only thing I can clearly recognize in terms of Waters' style element are the clearly eccentric characters. Everything is old-fashioned exaggerated, only Waters smears it a little more. It makes for a completely different movie that I expected. Where I had expected a serious and sentimental film, it turned out to be a much more explosive and light-hearted film.

Depp does a decent job, though these aren't really the roles I'll remember him for. With Locane, that thought is no different. In principle, the gestures they make are mainly exaggerated, but that does not necessarily make an acting performance better. With the right pleasure it even makes this a lot easier, because it is of course more fun to dare to present yourself.

Furthermore, it is somewhat reserved in terms of direction, despite attempts to make it into a spectacular whole. The camera work is too ordinary for that and the layout a bit too simple, but fortunately the film is fascinating and also does not last long. Waters knows very well what he is doing, but the charm wears off after a while. It can still score a sufficient score, especially for the nice eccentric spectacle.
