“Hate put me in prison. Love's gonna bust me out.”

Strong movie. The Hurricane is not very subtle, romanticized and the characters are very black and white, but that does not detract from the impressive and special story of Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter. The film lacks a sharp edge and this biopic is very much within lines.

But when director Jewison focuses on Carter's story and lets Denzel Washington do his thing, the film impresses. The part with Lesra and the Canadians, who want to get Carter out, is interesting and the bond between Carter and Lesra is strong. Washington and Shannon have a nice chemistry. The ending touches me every time and is a beautiful closing.

Story that of course deserves to be told, but my goodness it all goes by the book. Was honestly surprised that the movie was from 1999. It looks so faded and develops so predictably that I thought the movie was older. A biography at its dullest this

'You're black...???'

'You're white!!!'

Fascinating drama every time despite a few lesser points.

Like a sword of Damocles, Della Pesca hangs over Carter's head, actually from childhood. "Look again," he tells the half-dead victim. 'You again!' Carter hisses in turn. It is the prelude to 'barbertje must hang'. A black boy who has been against appearances from the start, was convicted, escaped, joined the army, went boxing, but once back had to serve his sentence. Still, the toughest was yet to come, an uphill battle against biased detectives and racism.

There is almost no fault in the story, Della Pesca is actually called differently. Can imagine that the family was not happy with such an image. Washington also seems to be cut out for the role, a role that he carries and can carry with conviction. Quite a difference from Ali and Will Smith. Not only is Ali almost unmatchable in facial expression and motor skills, besides that it is of course Will Smith that you see. Things Washington easily ignores.

Is it all sunshine? No, the threesome that Lesra is guiding couldn't have been more boring. And I also don't like Lesra herself a very nice cast that, despite being so smart, how do you determine that if someone can't read, really only irritates with his weird intonation and unclear way of talking. Something that fortunately gets better towards the end. The fact is, however, that the best scenes, say the movie, revolve around Washington.

The Hurricane is therefore, and despite, a more than fine drama about a sad history and always good to see again. Pure solidity and a beautiful rendition of Denzel Washington.
