Very nice and decent sports drama by Ron Howard. The film radiates solidity and gives a pretty good picture of the crisis years in which times were very difficult and poverty was great. Not a suitable time to have an injury as an athlete, while you could have benefited a lot from it at that time.

Great story in that sense about Jim Braddock the boxer who was judged as worn out, had to live in considerable poverty and accidentally came back into the picture for a standard training game of a title candidate. From soup kitchen to the championship. Not sure how exactly the story is followed. Beautiful color filters, fine sets and setting, and Giamatti in one of his best roles. Crowe solid as always and Craig Bierko who could make himself unpopular again as the boxer Max Bear who did have a slightly dubious name. But whether that man was such an asshole...? Nevertheless Bierko again at his worst or best, whichever way you want to approach it.

If I have to mention negative points: unfortunately, the story and the narration never really grab or stick with me. It's all decent, even a bit well-behaved, except for Bierko/Bear, but under such difficult circumstances I still miss a bit of a sharp edge of crime or bad people like in The Fighter for example. But of course you can't make what isn't there. Then there is the fight between Bear and Braddock, Howard gets so close with the camera that the two men with their dark hair look too much alike. Although there is a slight difference in length and they wear different colored pants, the difference is very difficult to see during the fight. Bit of a mistake by Howard.

Well, nice and decent sports drama, but not quite top.

I think it's beautifully made, well played too, but I have little to nothing with boxing, so I didn't find it very interesting. There are sports films that I really liked, even if I wasn't very fond of the sport. Perhaps I felt the emphasis was less on that sport and more on the surrounding story. In this film I find the story about the family and the poverty in which they have to survive interesting, but boxing is very much in the foreground. As a result, it didn't hold my attention well, and I don't find it extremely catchy or compelling. This is mainly a movie for boxing enthusiasts, I think. A small enough. 3*

A boxing film based on Jim Braddock's career that has seen all the stars of the rainbow and not just the canvas. A nice - albeit limited - insight into life after the stock market crash of 1929. Braddock was a coming man before that and had it all sorted out. After the stock market crash, he was as good as in the gutter. Partly due to his injuries and reserved game, he was no longer featured in the boxing federation. This is all set up quite easily. The transitions (rise-fall-rise) are very sudden and with little nuance. A touch of sentimentality is never far away.

Nevertheless, some nice atmospheric images and an excellent setting, especially from outside the ring. Not very memorable in the ring, not bad, just more than decent. A plus is that the battles and battles remained visually clear. Excellent acting roles too, in which Giamatti really stood out for me. But Zellweger and Crowe were also rock solid.

I agree with the most recent opinions above. All very solid, fine to pick up once, but I don't touch a 4.0 *.
