“I don't need a Pokémon, period.”

“Then what about a world-class detective? Because if you wanna find your pops, I'm your best bet. We're gonna do this, you and me.”

Nice. Pokémon Detective Pikachu is of course ridiculous and it doesn't amount to much, but the world around the people and Pokémon is portrayed entertainingly, and luckily the director takes the time to build up the story calmly. Justice Smith is also an endearing protagonist, and Newton, Nighy and the voice actors are all doing well too. But the biggest strength of the film is of course Ryan Reynolds as Detective Pikachu, and he provides the humor and the best moments in the film. The special effects also look nice (not everything is equally convincing), and the sentimental and feel good ending is completely deserved.

I used to be a definite Pokémon fan back in the day when you had 151, not 800. The cartoon series was a blast, the games were top notch, and I had hundreds of collectible cards and stickers. Until I got older and new Pokémon were introduced and I realized that this could become a never-ending franchise and collection. Then I gave up, until Pokémon Go became all the rage and I took to the streets in my late twenties to catch them. A feast of recognition after all those Pokémon-free years, the reason that I also set up this film.

And as a fan of the first generation you will be served at your beck and call. The city where dozens of Pokémon live in harmony with humans is very lively. I don't remember all the names but nice to see some favorites from the past. The CGI of the Pokémon regularly looks quite realistic, I actually dreamed of this before, but you didn't think something like this was possible. Pikachu is also well portrayed by an always entertaining Ryan Reynolds.

The first half of the film is the strongest, in which you can even see a real battle. But after that it culminates in literally every cliché imaginable including the obligatory puns as the city is destroyed below you. The CGI also suddenly becomes a lot less, way too much sci-fi in my opinion, although that's also because I've always found Mewtwo just an odd duck. The moment the protagonists clash with each other and then things turn out okay in these kinds of movies... you really just want to fast forward. All in all, pretty well entertained.

Very poor.

I played the very first game on the GameBoy ever, even saw a few episodes of the first seasons. If only because the idea of anime playing on Belgian TV was completely alien. But that's where my affection ends with the whole Pokémon thing.

Still, the start is pretty nice. A rather annoying guy in the lead role, but the Pokemon themselves looked quite funny and the world had a certain charm. Until Pikachu comes into view. Not the animal itself is the problem, but the completely insufferable voice acting of Reynolds. In any case, an actor who is very dominant, they can fire those who have thought of letting him do the voice work.

Not that the rest of the movie is that great now. The plot is simple and it's all a bit too childish to really enjoy it, but that annoying hyperactive stuff was really a mockery. Hopefully something they fix in the sequel, although I don't see it happening right away.

1.5*
