Ballon plot
"One of the most daring escapes of the Cold War."
Summer 1979 in Thuringia. The Strelzyk and Wetzel families have a daring plan. They want to flee from the GDR to the West in a self-made hot air balloon. Even when the balloon is built, the father Günter Wetzel remains against the escape. He's afraid the balloon is too small. With four people, the Strelzyk family embarks on the life-threatening adventure. Shortly before the border, however, the balloon suddenly starts to descend due to technical problems and a nerve-racking race against time begins.

To my knowledge, not many films have been made about the attempts to escape from the Eastern Bloc during the Iron Curtain. The handful that I know can invariably count on a high appreciation on my part. This attempt to escape the former GDR by hot air balloon also regularly pulled me to the edge of my seat. Not an absolute hit, but an entertaining film with many exciting moments.

Excellent film in which a family tries to escape the GDR in a homemade hot air balloon. A special and true story that makes for a compelling and fairly exciting film (even if you know in advance how it will end). A great outfit and the cast does a good job as well.
