Remains genius.

The great thing about this movie is that on paper it's a movie I should hate. Melancholy and peasant life, two themes that kill me. But Takahata does what only the best directors can do: convey a feeling through their films that you will never experience yourself.

This remains a very mature movie, arguably the most mature anime ever made. the female perspective is somewhat reminiscent of Hiroki, mixed with the laissez-fair atmosphere of a Megane. A wonderful holiday, perfectly executed, made with a lot of love and warmth. And then you get served a perfect ending. Takahata is one of the very best, keep that new movie coming.

Omoide Poro Poro is a typical Ghibli, with some nice moments, but sometimes the magic is missing here.

The main problem of Omoide Poro Poro is that it concerns two periods of Taeko's life, which are not equally interesting. Especially the adult life of Taeko was not always interesting to me. The work on the farm is explained in great detail, but somehow it didn't appeal to me that much. Fortunately, Taeko also regularly looks back to her childhood, and those flashbacks were a lot better and managed to arouse that beautiful, sometimes magical Ghibli feeling a few times.

Taeko is portrayed as a sweet but very insecure girl, for whom you can quite easily sympathize. School life, during lessons, breaks and sports, is just very recognizable. It is precisely those simple scenes that are often the most beautiful. It actually makes me think back to the past. The supporting music is beautiful and the often praised ending is certainly there.

It's a shame it's a Ghibli with two faces. The past is very beautiful, but the lesser present keeps the final assessment of a high score.

3.0*

I saw this Ghibli years ago and I didn't think it was that special. Now it was the time and I enjoyed this dreamy film. The story of a young woman who is looking for herself and always thinks back to her childhood. And those nostalgic moments are beautiful human memories. Beautiful things, lesser moments, but with sufficient impact on a child. Taeko doesn't quite know what to do with her career, her life, love, ... Just like when she was a child. Step by step she seems to discover what she wants and embraces her own history.

Only Yesterday is a beautiful animation with a difference in animation between childhood and present. Childhood is more playful and somewhat blurred in its background, while the present provides beautiful images with a finer finish. The story is so human and warm, without being corny. Touching and sometimes quite recognizable. A wonderful movie!
