I'm almost through all Ghibli. Unfortunately I found this one to be one of the lesser ones. As far as the plot is concerned, it is an interesting concept in which culture and tradition have to compete against big capitalist money. And apart from a few nice pastimes and atmospheric images from the clubhouse, I found the animated film not very interesting.

The animation itself is as always on point with many details and the bright use of color. The atmosphere setting was also good at times. For example, I always like to watch the Japanese cultural cooking occasions. The film immediately had me with it in the beginning, but I longed for more. A bit too little magic as only and here also mentioned.

Yes, great - I can appreciate these kinds of small films with an atmosphere sketch. If the voice acting is also subdued (which can be different in anime) it can't go wrong.

The funny thing is, the film consists of several stories that were also completely finished, but it still feels like an atmosphere sketch and although both stories do not really fit together it still does not feel bad. That will be because of the sympathetic characters, nice animation (tasty looking food!), pleasant atmosphere and good locations and in itself interesting content of a Japan on the threshold of a new time. I did find the story about the clubhouse a lot nicer than the story about the father and also the central love does not even work very well. Still, that should not spoil the fun. 4.0*.

Compared to other Ghibli films, this seems like a lightweight. But the bar is set high by this studio, so this animation is also quite good. Studio Ghibli has different drawing styles, but some things do come back a bit more. From Up on Poppy Hill is mainly coming home. A familiar animation with developed characters, a moving story and wonderful music. A film that you roll into and that gets better while watching. It never really becomes great, but the quality is there.
