The plot largely follows the first six episodes of the original Evangelion series. Shinji Ikari arrives in Tokyo-3. Still have little to do with it.

Seen the whole series a long time ago, liked this rehash about as much. Not much has changed, the film runs smoothly through the first 6 episodes, only this time with some improved animation.

Yet the animation is no longer that impressive and the pain points of the original series just linger. Shinji is really the biggest bleiter of the anime world, every scene in which he appears makes him pout, if he isn't already crying endlessly. An overdose of fear (or is it just poseritis?) kills this series.

Especially since the combination with the whole Eva/Angels thing makes no sense. One moment it's a somewhat clumsy but smooth action anime, then a lot of whining and a pity about nothing.

The only really cool things are the screams of the Angels and Evas, the animation could do with more and the pace is okay, but I don't think I'll ever understand what half the world has with this series.

By the way, I will still look at the other 2 parts, just catching up on some Anno work in the coming weeks.

1.5*

Review concerns the English version.

Young Shinji Ikari [Spike Spencer] discovers that his father [John Swasey] has been secretly working for years on an artificial human and fighting machine. These Evangelions must protect humanity against the Angels, who could destroy the world with 'the third impact'. To his astonishment it turns out that 'fate' has decided that Shinji should pilot the prototype. That doesn't go down well with Rei [Brina Palencia], the original director of Evangelion. The first of four animated films retelling the story of Hideaki Anno's 1990s television series 'Neon Genesis Evangelion'. Originally released in five languages. The voice cast for the English version does an excellent job and the sound editing is also of a very high level in this exciting opening of this popular Manga quadrilogy that immediately makes you long for the sequel: Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance from 2009.
