Evangerion Shin Gekijôban: Ha plot

"In the War Between Heaven and Earth, Salvation is Machine."

The film picks up where Evangelion 1.0 left off: the paramilitary organization NERV defends the world against the return of the Angels, but the ongoing war begins to take its toll. Shinji Ikari's relatively pleasant life takes a turn when a new group of Evangelion pilots, with red-haired Asuka Langley Shikinami joining him and Rei Ayanami. Misato Katsuragi, meanwhile, has to contend with old flame Ryoji Kaji, who has been added to NERV with a special mission. Due to their different agendas, tensions also arise between NERV Commander Gendo Ikari and the mysterious organization SEELE.

Nothing at all? No one?

Different cake this Evangelion, and the series does that really well. The problem remains, of course, when the whining and whining gets attention, the level immediately drops a lot. The problems of the characters are also so crazy far-fetched that it doesn't deserve two scenes, but in the end you can't ignore that with this series.

Fortunately, this Evangelion has been given a serious cleaning. Visually a lot better than the series and the updated first film. And then it is especially the fights that stand out very positively. At the level of the better Gainax work, with strong camera work and innovative effects.

Nice megalomaniac ending too. It doesn't get as epic as an Akira, but can always enjoy it, all pseudo nonsense is possible at such a moment. After part 4, Anno might do well to release Evangelion - The Action Bits, I think I can spend a four on the whole thing.

Makes you hope for a nice third part. Fortunately, because after the first film I saw it pretty gloomy.

3.0*

Review concerns the English version.

Shinji Ikari [Spike Spencer] managed to save humanity from the 'third impact' in Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, but the danger is far from over. To prepare for another Angel counterattack, Nerv develops improved versions of the Evangelion. That also means new recruits with whom Shinji and Rey [Brina Palencia] must learn to work together. However, mutual frictions, fears and uncertainties stand in the way of good cooperation. The second film in the Evangelion quadriology takes a closer look at the main characters and their mutual relationships and has an emphatically ecological message. Introduces a number of new characters, the best of which are Asuka Langley Shikinami [Tiffany Grant] and Mari Illustrious Makinami [Trina Nishimura]. The middle section is a bit slow and the eccentric score (including an out-of-tune contribution by a children's choir) is distracting, but the voice renditions in this English spoken version are once again excellent and the finale is definitely worth watching. Of course there is an open ending that prepares us for the sequel: Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo.
