Average.

I am a fan of Middle Earth as The Lord of the Rings shows. The film adaptation of The Hobbit has turned out to be a lot less, and again that is clear. Especially the team that wrote the three films just didn't do a good job. A lot of fan fiction, defining elements of the book have been omitted, making it a soup. What remains are isolated scenes that are entertaining, interspersed with bad cinema.

Just like in the previous 2 films, the stars are also known here: Martin Freeman and for me also Richard Armitage and Lee Pace, for me the biggest surprise. In his case, too bad that Thranduil is an unfinished character.

Visually much more plastic than ever. That's where Peter Jackson went wrong. Sure, Smaug is great animated and there are creatures like that. But there's also just a lot of ugliness in it, both in design and execution (CGI Orcs in a 'tangible' Valley, for example). A few mass scenes have been successful again as a spectacle. Only a shame about Legolas's obligatory bag of tricks, a good example of how Jackson thinks he has to push through something when it's just way too much. A shame, because the extended edition contains scenes (which incomprehensibly did not make it to the theater version) that do feel right, for example Thorin's funeral.

I liked this third part a lot less than the second part. The inspiration looks like. Maybe also because there is a lot of fighting, which I think is the most boring part of these films. It also doesn't help how unbelievably the Orcs are portrayed: gigantic bundles of muscles that are bred to fight and also do nothing but fight and train for battle, but who then lose every fight. Even an untrained child with a toy sword seems to be able to win a battle with 100 Orks effortlessly. Possibly a rational explanation is that Orcs are rather brainless as evil (according to Socrates and Plato, evil is the absence of light, of substance, of intelligence, so essentially 'nothing' and in any case something very stupid): do you also notice how very Orcs seem to be modeled after zombies (which makes all these LOTR and Hobbit movies kind of zombie movies)? But then the Orcs - like zombies - should not be able to speak or otherwise manifest any intelligence. In any case, Orks seem bred primarily to be slaughtered defenseless by our heroes who, even when they first get their hands on a sword - quite unlike the Orks who seem to have nothing to learn - can immediately fight formidable. It doesn't make the movies any more interesting.

When I think of the third Hobbit movie, only one image usually pops into my head; a bit behind the scenes, in which Peter Jackson sits with his hands in her hair. He stares at something and doesn't know it anymore. Contrast that image with the countless moments in the bonus material when Jackson appears as an enthusiastic child on the set of Lord of the Rings. There is very little left of that. And you can see that very well in the end result.

Throughout the film it seems that Jackson is just doing something, but actually has no idea. As a viewer, you don't have that either. The film seems to suddenly build up to a big fight with five armies (I only know that because of the title, the film itself is very difficult about who/what and why). At one point a CGI army pops out of all the holes and the computer generated figures start fighting with each other. Of course there is no suspense, as we already know that no main character is in danger and a Hobbit with a stone can defeat countless orcs, but this time it is once again completely unclear what is going on and why. Most frustratingly, this ugly CGI fight goes on forever, but suddenly Jackson is in a rush and the ending is rushed. Think that mayor's assistant who dressed up as a woman was taking up too much time. Apparently every prequel trilogy should have a Jar Jar Binks.

After the first Hobbit I was disappointed, after the second extremely frustrated. I don't really feel anything with this one. Whatever.

1.5 stars.
