LOTR overwhelmed me at the time. This was the first movie that really impressed me. Awesome. The music, Middle-earth, the characters, the images, the atmosphere. And this 3 parts long. Just unparalleled class. Perhaps that also set the bar unfairly high for this Hobbit movie that I had been looking forward to for months.

I watched this for the 2nd time today and I don't regret it. Updating my rating a bit. The Middle-earth setting remains great. Beautiful images, captivating story and brilliant music. Contrary to others, I do like the references to what is to come. There are certainly some interesting characters in it. I find Thorin interesting, but especially the already well-known Gandalf remains a great character. I didn't find the dwarves very interesting, although I can certainly enjoy the easy-going scenes. Is everything great then? No definitely not.

Fantastic scenes (Saruman at the table with the elves, the dwarves in the house of Bilbo, Smeagol and Bilb together) are replaced by mediocre scenes where especially the extreme ''coincidences'' bother me. Think of the stone giants, the fall in the caves or the scene in the trees. I find the action scenes in particular a bit clumsy and especially childishly executed. It's just all a bit too sweet for me when it's not supposed to be. The scene with the fat English-speaking Goblin (also the rescue here again...) is an example of this. It's entertaining, but I'd rather have an Azog. It's certainly not bad, but it could have been more.

It certainly does not reach the level of its predecessors. This is certainly no shame and does not alter the fact that this is just a fun movie if you can enjoy LOTR. Well worth it. Hesitating a bit between 3.5 and 4.

With this film, Peter Jackson actually takes a similar approach to the Lord of The Rings. It doesn't really start with a party, but it does start with a dinner party. Then the adventure begins. While The Hobbit can never beat the Lord of The Rings, they are certainly decent movies. I didn't like the last one in the cinema at the time. Legolas really threw all the laws of physics overboard. In fact, he does that in the second as well, but it was less disturbing there. You notice that The Hobbit is more of a children's book, there is actually more humor in it. The CGI is (unfortunately) present more frequently than in LOTR. Azog is a decent villain played by Manu Bennett (Crixus in Spartacus). That voice is really great. Then we have the fixed value Gandalf. Elrond, Galadriel, Saruman and of course Gollum also pass by. Richard Armitage has undoubtedly become much more famous for his role as Thorin Oakenshield. He does have the stubbornness of a dwarf, but I also think he is very strict with Bilbo. Kind of inappropriate if you're actually dependent on him.

Very nice movie! Too bad that LOTR was actually released earlier because this trilogy came first, and is actually not quite the beginning.

I see a lot of comments from people who think it's a copy of the LOTR, but I wonder if people realize it's all from this and an even earlier part of Sauron beating Sauron that hasn't been filmed yet.

The hobbits is the story with which the last film ends and the LOTR film the fellowship of the ring continues.

In the story, the LOTR is also the most epic in terms of combat.

Some things have undoubtedly been taken a bit too far with the stone mountains fighting and all that, but it is still a beautiful film. Also to really understand the LOTR you can't do without these films, because that's starting to read halfway through a book and saying that the beginning doesn't matter.

CGI has been taken a bit too far in some parts and the troll king should have been less "funny" intended. But I enjoyed it from start to finish. So is the LOTR trilogy of all parts.

Very worthwhile, especially for people who have not yet watched these films and are planning to. Then start with this one first!
