It's a shame that this film violates my sense of credibility on all sorts of fronts. Gradually I got the impression that I was dealing with an angry fairy tale that, oh so predictably, was still going to end well. A kind of Super-mom who will conquer evil for a while (wink to son in the sense of "Everything's gonna be okay.") and Daddy won't let us down.

Anyway, this canned junk can fly to oblivion and all I will remember is that I Deliverance (1972) around the same theme in all facets much better.

Not really good, even when revised. A lot of clichés stuck together and it didn't get exciting at any point. I don't think Meryl Streep fits in such a role at all; she was very disappointing to me as the house mother type who goes rowing wildly. It was completely ridiculous that the husband (Strathairn) climbed the cliffs and then got ahead of the fast-floating boat via the steep mountains, and then still had time to prepare a trap. Painful. The big positive point of this film are the outdoor shots and the shots from the boat. The actors were all set to go rafting themselves. Visually often spectacular, but unfortunately with a plot of nothing.

Centered around a canoe trip, The River Wild is a linear action-adventure film with no major surprises. Nevertheless, the film is worth watching and is exciting. That is not least due to the actors. Those are good. Especially the lead roles. Meryl Streep as an emancipated strong woman and the center of the story. Kevin Bacon as an opaque and icy villain. They represent appealing and believable characters. Characters that add value to the story and make watching the film enjoyable regardless of the content.

The beautiful nature images and the numerous action scenes also offer great entertainment. Of course, the film uses well-known genre clichés, but the rapids and stunts are spectacular and ensure a nice hectic pace. A little annoying is the subplot surrounding Streep and her husband's marriage that pops up sporadically in an obligatory attempt to throw some emotion into the film. Fortunately, the relational theme is not explored too much and the story does not suffer much from it. It runs smoothly and concentrates on things that matter, such as (under the skin) threat, psychological warfare and excellent action.

Nice.
