Pixels plot

"Game On."

When aliens misinterpret the video images of classic arcade games as a declaration of war, they attack Earth. They use the games as a model for their various attacks. President Will Cooper enlists the help of his childhood best friend Sam Brenner, a video game champion in the 1980s and now a home theater installer, to lead a team of arcade gamers to defeat the aliens and save the planet.

You heard Hall & Oates you blew it

Nice film this 'eighties trip down memory lane', but you have to watch it with the right attitude otherwise you will soon get annoyed by the faint moments and actors like Josh Gad and Kevin James (as president yes yes come take a look at it).

Fortunately, there is also plenty to enjoy at Pixels. First of all, the return to the silver screen of the old arcade games, a great find. And if that is also accompanied by excellent effects and some strong jokes, the film just gives you a very entertaining one and a half hour.

The aliens' announcements were especially funny.

Furthermore, no high-quality acting, although Sandler did it properly and Michelle Monaghan was extremely charming, surprising story or brilliant shots, but Pixels does what it is intended for, entertaining with a nostalgic touch.

“Pac-Man's a bad guy?”

Adam Sandler and I will never be a good match but he certainly has his outliers. Unfortunately, Pixels is mediocre. Certainly not as bad as some of his other films but it doesn't want to be really funny.

Ancient computer games threaten the Earth and Sandler and his group must save the Earth. A nice fact that little is done with. It all looks nice and especially at the end with the Donkey Kong game you are short of eyes. That is also the best scene with a good combination of action and humor. Unfortunately, the rest of the film doesn't come close. Even a Pac-Man chase can't change that.

Everything Patrick Jean's short film 'Pixels' (2010) actually needed: dick jokes, a saltless love story between Adam Sandler as the installation brute and Michelle Monaghan as an alcoholic female army officer, more dick jokes, Kevin James playing a merry Donald Trump plays (just as incompetent here, but at least in this version he does some cool dances!), some sexist teenage fantasies about female curves, Q*bert doing things that no pixel figure should do, and Peter Dinklage gnawing filthy, semi-hip sunglasses intentional and funny but never funny. Long story short: 'Pixels' (2015) adds nothing to the sense of wonder and retro vibe of the original short. It's silly and silly as American blockbusters can be, but pushes the right buttons with a visually pleasing final act. But what more could have been done with this material if the creativity hadn't just gone into those action scenes!
