Great homegrown war film. It may look a bit clumsy here and there, but the tension built up gradually makes up for it. After his excellent Achtste-groepers Crying Not (2012) Dennis Bots again pleasantly surprises with an excellent youth drama.

Strong film and a very pleasant surprise among youth films, that's how they should be made. The film is exciting for young and old. It is also deservedly broadcast in multiple countries. I have recently seen several recent Dutch youth films (Achtste-groepers and Briefgeheim) and I am really amazed by the level. Disney can learn something from that with its cliché fashion dolls and children's heroes. Secrets of War is (like the other two I mention) a film that clearly shows respect for the young viewers and does not mistake them for stupid viewers. Recommended. Four well-deserved stars.

Secrets of War

Secrets of War is an excellent war film. It is actually more of a coming of age film that happens to be set in the Second World War, but fortunately director Dennis Bots manages to increase the tension at important moments. Although this is ultimately more Stand By Me than Black Book. Nice acting by the young cast.
