Achtste-groepers Huilen Niet plot

'Eighth Groupers Don't Cry' tells the story of the lively Akkie (Hanna Obbeek) who is wild about football, even though classmate Joep thinks that football is not a girls' sport. Akkie does not let herself be fooled and with humor she counters his bullying. When she gets leukemia, Akkie retains her optimism and energy. Miss Ina's entire class sympathizes with her and even from the hospital Akkie continues to interfere with the school football tournament. When she deteriorates so much that it is impossible for her to participate in the tournament, the tough Joep comes up with a very special plan.

Substantial (and occasionally quite intense) drama film (unlike the title not a real children's film) about teenager Akkie from group 8 who becomes seriously ill. Cinematography: outdoor scenes on the football field and schoolyard, indoor scenes at school, at Akkie's home and in the Albert Schweitzer hospital. Typical Dutch atmosphere in the film. Music: smooth and well-fitting and a great soundtrack at the end. Actors: the young players play very naturally, well and realistically as if it were really a group 8. And what a sweetheart that dark 'nurse' is, she reminded me of a doula.....

Plot: Akkie likes to play football and regularly has issues with classmate Joep. After she often gets a nosebleed and bruises, an examination shows that she has leukemia. What follows is treatment in the hospital and how Akkie and her classmates deal with this. The repetitive images of Kareltje (Akkie's cat) seem to be a sort of chapter division. Akkie had made a bet with Doctor 'Mustache', but when he entered her room without a mustache, I couldn't bear it anymore. Not only do 8th graders cry, but their parents too! The sledgehammer blow hit me hard, because I myself have a blond daughter in group 8......

A film that makes a difficult subject (illness and death) manageable and negotiable, with the higher message: be kind to each other, enjoy and celebrate life, because you never know when your chapter will be closed.......

Touching youth film about the unfairness of cancer and the hard and unequal fight against it, and at the same time also an ode to youthful courage, optimism and above all friendship.

Striking acting by the young people in this film, in which, in addition to the main characters, the bright Amin Belyandouz and the romantic Bram Flich are charming.

I watched this movie with my almost 10-year-old daughter. Still a very intense theme that, in retrospect, had a small impact on her. Well, always fine if you can talk about it afterwards.

The start of the film is still an ordinary family film, were it not for the fact that one of the children becomes seriously ill. Leukemia indeed has nothing nice in it and is better called stupid as Akkie put it.

The atmosphere and setting was well done with the school life of the children. A fine teacher as everyone would like one with a fine Eva Van der Gucht. But doctor Mustache was also allowed to be there, just like all the other children. The disarmed scenes in the hospital were also nice.

Very endearing film with a heavy impact towards the end when Akkie doesn't make it. To be honest, I didn't see it coming. A warm film to think about.
