Spielberg's strong debut before making his blockbusters (except for a few) mostly Hollywood and family-friendly. A simple story that is just so strong. The story could have been written by Stephen King, who was just inspired by this film years later in another story. It will always be questionable whether Duel would have been known today if Spielberg hadn't broken through and become one of the most famous Hollywood directors (of his generation).

The film was made for television, but the quality doesn't really show that, because the simplicity also comes into its own on the big screen. You can see that some scenes have been added to extend the playing time. They could have easily left, although it doesn't really bother them. And striking at the end that the truck does not explode, but crashes impressively. It is more impressive than another explosion I must say. Strong film so it shines in its simplicity.

A simple, but entertaining 'car movie' with quite a few exciting scenes. The truck(er) is a kind of omniscient, 'flamable' tormentor who challenges the main character's masculinity. It is implied that the trucker is a (supernatural) manifestation of David's weaknesses and thus there is some sort of cosmic connection between the two duelists. 'Mann' slowly but surely seems to realize that escape is impossible and eventually builds up enough confidence to face the confrontation. Apart from all the symbolism, a very nice film that is well portrayed. A few slumps here and there, but the duel on the deserted roads in California remains fascinating from start to finish.

Decent debut.

Spielberg is a director who can really have it in him, but can also blunder at times. In any case, this debut was a show-case of some strong directorial choices, but that doesn't make it a strong, good or exciting film.

It's not very exciting after all. That's not because of the year it was made, but mostly because I never felt like Weaver was actually in danger. Nevertheless, the tension build-up is well put together and some scenes do manage to be a bit exciting.

Duel's biggest problem, however, is Weaver. What a clumsy acting he shows here. And that from a relatively respected actor in my opinion. But this was mostly nonsensical and unrealistic. Cock rose water and Pipo the clown in 1 person. It really never felt like a human being.

But the film was shot pretty well. Funny camera work, so close to the road, and at times really exciting scenes and stunts. It is not very dangerous, in that respect the film remains quite safe, but at times it certainly has something.

However, 90 minutes was a bit too long to keep up such a chase. Eventually, the film starts to get a bit repetitive and starts to become predictable. Spielberg's tricks are also starting to work out with, for example, too obvious Speed-Ups.

But it's fun in the end and still looks good. As far as I'm concerned, this looks visually better than his later Jaws , but his skill as a director doesn't even come close. A decent thriller in the end, with bad acting but good tension building.
