DragonHeart plot

"You will believe."

Prince Einon's father is murdered during a revolt. He himself is badly wounded, but a dragon saves his life in exchange for the promise to defend the weak and renounce tyranny and violence. Once king, Einon reveals himself to be a much greater tyrant than his father. Bowen blames the dragon for this and sets out to exterminate all dragons in the land. Twelve years later he almost succeeded, only one dragon remains. But their battle ends in a draw, so they make a deal to move from town to town as dragon slayers and earn a lot of money. However, they do not consider the venom of King Einon...

Mediocre family film. The story didn't really appeal to me. A dragon slayer who will eventually play in cahoots with the dragon goes a long way for me. Especially if it's the dragon he actually wanted to take revenge on, just like King Einnon. Even after the dragon actually speaks and then in the familiar voice of Sean Connery, he still doesn't realize it's this dragon he was looking for. Dennis Quaid plays mediocre to well here, just like most of the other actors. Sometimes a bit theatrical, but I suppose this is the intention, after all it seems clear to me to be a children's film. The dragon certainly doesn't look bad for a 1996 film. Together with the music and the fairly decent choreographies in the sword fighting, this film gives it a pass.

Recently saw the film on TV again, when the film came out 20 years ago it had special effects that were astonishing, such as the (then) natural movement of the dragon. Now it looks a bit dated, but it doesn't bother. That is because the film is otherwise well put together, even though it is a fantasy film and the story has been filmed many times before, the film still looks good. Other pluses are beautiful landscapes and scenery. The action is also well done. The acting is okay, although I thought Thewlis didn't fit as a villain, it's probably just me after seeing him in the Potter series. The show is stolen by Connery, his typical warm voice makes the dragon believable, I only know another actor who can put such conviction in his voice, Morgan Freeman. But the best thing about the film is the music, Edelman goes to the top of his abilities in this film. Especially the song to the stars will stay in your memory. Dragonheart is a very enjoyable movie if only for the music.

Mediocre.

Cohen has always been a limited director with some very minor outliers. But even those titles only got a six or a seven with me. The rest of his career is relatively mediocre and limited. This former DragonHeart also remains limited in content.

The look of the movie is especially bad. Very simply put together sets and easy camera work. Scenes like the early attack on the farming village just look dull and sad. There is little life to be seen and the style remains rather boring at all times. That's just the beginning of a film that doesn't convince visually anywhere.

Fortunately the acting is just that little bit better with a fine Quaid in the lead role. Connery also continues to have a very intimidating and recognizable voice. You can hardly pay the best man for his character. That character is unfortunately a very ugly animated dragon. It seemed to be just about the beginning for the SyFy movies. Too bad, because his dragon was nice otherwise. He just doesn't look like it.

Thanks to the humor, the first half of the film still wants to be light-hearted, but as the film slowly becomes more serious, it all starts to fall like a house of cards. The second half of the film is just a boring spectacle with a disappointing finale and invisible attempts at sentiment.

However, it is the almost absent cinematography and colorless content of the sets that make the film stand out the most. It all looks too simple, as if 0.0 effort went into it. DragonHeart must have been a fun movie if you grew up with it, but in the meantime it's a bit of a letdown. Cohen actually proves to me once again that he is not very impressive in terms of directing.
