Superhero movies have never really been my thing. Perhaps also the reason why I had never seen this Batman before. Not that I was bored, certainly not, but I thought the film came across as quite cold-hearted, which lowered the credibility to a low point.

Take the character of The Joker, played by Jack Nicholson. He is the star of the film anyway and brings the film extra panache. Wonderful actor, but I couldn't take The Joker's character in this movie too seriously. Clownesque even at times, which lacked the idea of a psychopathic monster. I did have that feeling with Ledger. And so were some scenes: absurd rather than repulsive: for example in the restaurant or at Viki's house.

The film is now thirty years old, but visually I already saw better things from that time (and older). Gotham City had to look threatening and was all in all just ok, but you can't help but notice that it's all starting to look dated. The Batmobile is a fun toy, but the speed didn't look right. I also expected a bit more from Batman than the umpteenth shoot or pull string. It didn't come across as very menacing and superior. And meanwhile I had also forgotten how insanely beautiful Kim Basinger was at the time.

So some mixed feelings about this movie. Certainly not super bad, but the expectations were not fully met. No nostalgia for me, so give me Nolan's version(s).

One of my favorite movies, and mostly because I grew up with this one I was 11 when I saw it in 89 and yes yes then you rented another video tape. I think Christopher Nolan's Batman Trilogy is genius but it just doesn't come close to this one, especially because Michael Keaton is THE Batman and Jack Nicholson is THE Joker sorry other fans who don't agree with me but it is The story becomes beautifully told and the film is also nice and dark and also in terms of effects it is well done, in short a classic of its kind and is worth watching every time.
