Jake Gyllenhaal says it would be an "honour" to be cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman in the new DC Universe.
The old DC Extended Universe was scrapped following a restructuring by Warner Bros, with James Gunn taking over the creative direction of the studio.
Robert Pattinson will continue playing Bruce in The Batman series, but there's another Batman movie coming, The Brave and the Bold, which will take place within the new universe.
Gyllenhaal is one of a number of names who have been linked with the role, and it definitely seems like he would be up for taking on the challenge.
"Oh, man. That’s a classic. It’s an honour," he told ScreenRant.
"Speaking of playing roles that other incredible actors have played in the past, to me actually roles that other incredible actors have played in the past, which, to me, actually, when I think about it, I’m going to play Iago in 'Othello' with Denzel Washington.
"I think about, like, the history of actors that have played that role throughout time, and I’m intimidated by that. So that’s the first level.
"That’s what I’m working on right now. But of course, it would be an honour always. Those types of things and those roles are classics."
Gyllenhaal nearly played Batman in 2005
For the 2005 reboot, Batman Begins, Gyllenhaal was one of the finalists to play Bruce, but ended up losing out to Christian Bale.
David S. Goyer, who co-wrote the Dark Knight trilogy with Christopher Nolan, previously revealed that Gyllenhaal had been his preferred choice.
"We would chat about all sorts of things ... there were a number of people who had screen-tested, and I had advocated for Gyllenhaal," he said on the Happy Sad Confused pod.
"I mean, Gyllenhaal is amazing, Christian Bale is amazing,"
