Lost to Air Every Episode in a Row Next Season?
TCAs: The president of ABC discusses Lost, plus the fate of Day Break, The Nine, and Six Degrees.
by Eric Goldman
January 16, 2007 - Running for nearly two weeks straight, the TCA (Television Critics Association) winter press tour is a major endeavor, where nearly all the biggest channels -- from the broadcast networks to popular cable stations -- have presentations and panels discussing their upcoming programming, including new and returning series.
ABC began their TCA day with a Q&A with Stephen McPherson, the President of the network. This past fall, ABC launched several new one-hour dramas, with varying degrees of success. While Ugly Betty is a hit, and Brothers & Sisters has a nice sized audience, there was notably low audience ratings for several other shows, including the heavily serialized The Nine and Day Break, which, along with Six Degrees, found themselves off the air before the end of the year.
Asked about the decision this season to air six episodes of Lost in the fall, and the remainder in the spring, McPherson said he felt ideally he would like to air the entire next season of Lost all together, with no breaks, in the manner 24 does, and that there is a "good chance" this will be the case for the fourth season. McPherson added that it's still not decided if Lost would return in the fall or spring, if they do decide to make that change.
McPherson addressed the complaints about Day Break - After the show was pulled from the air, ABC pledged to provide the remaining episodes on their website, so fans would get a conclusion to the 13 part story. However, none of these episodes have been made available yet, thanks to problems with the music rights. McPherson promised that these issues would be rectified soon, and that the episodes would be available online by the end of February, at the latest.
McPherson noted that The Nine and Six Degrees, which also will have 13 episodes each in total, could still both return to the air this season. Unlike Day Break and The Nine, Six Degrees in fact is currently still shooting, due to some "creative changes" and a new cast addition that led to a break in production.
Fans invested in The Nine will not be pleased to hear that, unlike Day Break, the 13th and final episode does not wrap up the serialized story. Though the chances seem incredibly bleak, McPherson appeared to not want to completely rule out the show going back into production at some point, saying "right now" they would not be shooting any more episodes of The Nine.
McPherson said that three new ABC series, Traveler, Notes From the Underbelly and October Road, will be on the air by May. Traveler is about "two young men framed for a terrorist act in Manhattan," while October Road is a "male-ensemble soap" from Beautiful Girls writer Scott Rosenberg. Notes From the Underbelly is a half-hour comedy about a young couple expecting their first baby.
en nog een deel van een interview met de titel van de laatste episode van seizoen 3:
Question: Can you tell me something new about Lost? Anything big or small would be great!— Joshua
Ausiello: Would you settle for ginormous?! After Lost's press-tour session on Sunday, Carlton Cuse revealed to me exclusively that he and Damon Lindelof are parting with tradition and not code-naming this season's top-secret finale scene after a Jewish bread product. (To recap, Walt's kidnapping in the Season 1 finale was known as "The Bagel," Season 2's introduction of Penny was known as "The Challah" and this season's climactic game-changer was slated to be called "The Matzo.") "We're actually not calling it 'The Matzo,'" Cuse said. "We're calling it 'The Snake in the Mailbox.' We were just joking about how scary that would be if you came home and you stuck your hand in the mailbox and there was a snake in there. So we thought, 'Well, that's actually a good metaphor for the surprise of our Season 3 ending.'" And this, my friends, is where things get really spoilery. [Spoiler alert] When I asked Cuse if he could drop any hints about "The Snake in the Mailbox," he offered up this fraktastic piece of prattle: "I think Penny and Desmond's relationship will become something that will be a part of the season finale."
Question: Could you give us some info 'bout the future Skate on Lost?— Jeannette
Ausiello: As I strongly hinted at a few weeks ago, Kate's Jack/Sawyer dilemma is far from resolved — despite what happened in that cage last fall. "It would be a bad assumption to assume [the triangle] was over," warns Carlton Cuse. "For that moment in time, Sawyer was the right choice. But that's not the end of it, but any means whatsoever."
Question: Will the Jack-Juliet relationship develop into something more than just captor-hostage story line?— Natalie
Ausiello: Most definitely, says Cuse. "The relationship and the chemistry between these two characters is something we're really interested in as writers. Juliet is a really intriguing character. It's not entirely clear how good she is or how bad she is. What are her underlying motives? What is her history on the island? And I think her relationship with [Jack] is something that is going to be really compelling as we run into the later part of the season."

Why the Lost endpoint is a good thing
Why the Lost endpoint is a good thing

Lost CastAfter learning that the producers of Lost have been seriously considering a planned endpoint to the show, I was a little relieved (and, frankly, impressed). This could be the best thing to happen to Lost since the appearance of Ben Linus. Think about it:
* Remember Rose and Bernard? With an established timeline, perhaps the writers will take more of an interest in some of the long-neglected supporting cast members. Now that most of the Tailies have gone to that big traffic court in the sky, it's become likely that they were never essential to the plot. The Tailie-centric episodes gave us no vital information, with the possible exception of "The Other 48 Days." An endpoint would give the writing staff a chance to concentrate on Sayid, Claire, and the rest of the forgotten island gang.
* No more four-toed statues. If the burden to keep Lost mysteries open-ended is eliminated, so will the temptation to throw in another random mystery for future examination. If Lost continues indefinitely, do you think there's even a chance that we'd find out what that four-toed Lord of the Rings knockoff is all about? Probably around season eight. A potential deadline means resolution of current plot points, fewer new, tangential mysteries, and a lot of satisfied viewers.
* Less use of filler subplots. I never thought I would get over that tree frog storyline. What was that, anyway? Don't even get me started on that very special episode where Claire misses peanut butter. Lost writers have frequently padded their episodes with pointless fluff that develops neither the plot nor the characters. This new timeline could put an end to all of that.
Assuming that the producers keep their word, the next few seasons of Lost could be significantly better. Fingers crossed!
