Bloodline still had its moments, but Inferno really goes over the edge and can be written off. The film also fails as a psychological thriller, but you are constantly wondering what this has to do with Hellraiser. Pinhead ultimately only has a small role and the cenobites have all been replaced by typical 00's horror figures. The typical atmosphere is gone and you're stuck with an incredibly annoying guy for over ninety minutes. It doesn't seem right to me to hope that the demons will soon end this movie. Cheap and uninspired.

The first of many straight to video sequels from Hellraiser. The first four Hellraiser films were still somewhat related in terms of storyline and the messy Bloodline was the conclusion. In the cinema the film was not a success, but on video it did quite well. And money obviously means another sequel, so Hellraiser: Infero was created. The story goes that this Inferno - like the sequels that came after it - started as a script for another movie. Still, the director believes that this script is set up as a Hellraiser film and refers to the first film, where the Cenobites only play a small role at the end. Apparently that's how this Inferno was born, a detective thriller with a cameo from a Cenobite here and there.

You could rate the film in two ways; as a Hellraiser sequel or as a standalone film. As a standalone film, this is not much special; we follow an unsympathetic main character, who experiences all kinds of strange things à la Jacobs Ladder. Visually the film is not very unappealing, but in terms of content it is all very dull and far from memorable; director Derrickson draws inspiration from everywhere; because better to steal bad than to think bad yourself, apparently. But the film is not a simple detective story, it is titled Hellraiser and Pinhead's head is huge on the poster. Feels a bit like putting the head of pilot number 14 on the poster for a Star Wars movie. But apart from misleading advertising, Pinhead's role has also been completely overhauled; apparently he is now a puncher of people who do bad things. Strange, never thought that the evil Pinhead has suddenly become a moral knight. Then you really wonder if this script was written like a Hellraiser movie.

1.5 stars.

This has little to do with the earlier Hellraisers. This Hellraiser: Inferno has virtually no Pinhead, not too many cenobites anyway, and most of the movie is a pretty bland supernatural crime thriller. You know, serial killer, biting cop with personal issues, investigation, unexplained matters, and it shouldn't be surprising that in the end those cenobites are behind all the misery in that detective's life. It kinda looks like it as if Derrickson was actually more interested in making a crime thriller, but then realized he'd been hired for the Hellraiser franchise and needed to do something with cenobites, supernatural effects, and gore after all. But this is not much more than uninspired stealing work.
