Very nice character film, with a sublime role by Romy Schneider, who really takes the film to a higher level. Because César et Rosalie is mainly about the character drawing; the characters are psychologically complex and therefore remain interesting throughout the entire playing time. They develop in a search for themselves and their relationship to others. It is precisely this incompleteness that is extremely fascinating, especially because there is also enough explanation to form a framework in which apparently capricious actions become palpable (David "does not carry" and therefore does not do full justice to Rosalie, César "carries" too much with same result, simply put). I found one of the most beautiful scenes on the beach, where César drives up while Rosalie and David are sitting by the sea. That scene is so loaded with tension, for all the characters (and also for the viewer, even violence is an option in the beginning), and that transforms into a new understanding. Very nice. The design of César et Rosalie is beautiful in a calm way (use of color, close-ups), the acting, as said, very strong. The last 20 minutes are a bit messy. Remarkably enough, Sautet uses a common procedure from the 19th century novel to give a summary at the end of the further fate of the characters. But he breaks through that again in extremis, to let the previously mentioned incompleteness win definitively over the fate-drawn, fixed character from most such novels. Rosalie is free and makes her own choices, even if the image remains still.

This psychological study has long been my favorite film by Claude Sautet, a specialist in making straightforward films about the good and weak sides of and the contradictions between people. Fascinating the way in which the character differences between the three protagonists are emphasized; in a calm way in spite of the fact that emotions sometimes reach the boiling point. The final scenes are, in a word, beautiful.

With an Yves Montand at his best and a subdued, but extremely charming Romy Schneider, Sautet naturally has the ideal actors for this romantic drama. In all its simplicity an exciting and very special film.

Through a tip from eRCee with another film by Sautet (the sublime Les Choses de la Vie, also with Romy Schneider by the way). But except for the presence of Romy Schneider, I don't think the two films are very similar. This César et Rosalie is clearly lighter. That means that the film is entertaining, but touches me less deeply and certainly loses some tension in the last half hour. Also visually slightly less strong. But nevertheless a nice atmospheric film with a fine Montand and a delightful Schneider and especially their scenes together that feel very real because of how they treat each other with understanding for a long time. Only Frey as David I found a somewhat lesser interpretation, I also did not understand for a moment what Schneider was looking for in him, while the film is largely about that. Still a beautiful final piece of a few minutes with a great final shot, which is almost inspired by Les Quatre Cents Coups. 3.5*.
