Shop-window puppet film that caused some surprise at the time. A musical from French soil! Unfortunately it is all a bit stiff, artificial and the singing is not very good due to the doubles and the film has certainly not stood the test of time. Had to laugh with the young, singing (?) Michel Piccoli and dance phenomenon Gene Kelly, inserted just to be sure, those sailors ("On the Town", "Anchors Aweigh") must have wanted to join.

Seen on DVD. Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, next to Les umbrellas de Cherbourg, remains one of Jacques Demy's masterpieces, with wonderful musical support from Michel Legrand. The chansons in the film are beautiful here and there, such as the chanson by Maxime, Simon and Yvonne (whose lyrics flow into each other). Also a special role of Francoise Dorleac, one of the 'jumelles' (twins) in the film and the older sister of Catherine Deneuve in real life. Unfortunately, she died tragically in the South of France shortly after this film. Furthermore, the role of (the now 100-year-old) diva Danielle Darrieux is also special, who of course sings her chanson herself.

The film may look a bit dated in 2017, but it remains a very beautiful film and I actually wonder if one could still make such a film in this form today.

Absolutely think this is a wonderful spectacle, a delight for the eyes and ears. Soursops on the side, please, because here are the Rochefort demoiselles. Enjoyed from the first to the last second is becoming a habit with Demy films, and one that I definitely want to rewatch and experience again. It may also have helped that I had the opportunity to project it with a beamer.

I like everything here. The cast led by Catherine Deneuve and her sister Françoise Dorléac (who died tragically in a car accident the year of its release), Jacques Perrin, Michel Piccoli and Gene Kelly. It is striking how Gene Kelly moves like a fish in water in this film. Footage in the extras showed that French was the language behind the scenes and that was no problem for Kelly. The choreographies are top - Dorléac already had dance experience but for Deneuve it was new - performed in the streets and on the main square of Rochefort. This in combination with a very thoughtful use of colors in design and costuming; and of course the beautiful score by Michel Legrand in his recognizable style. I have since purchased a box of his collected work from that man.

I immediately feel like exploring Rochefort and wandering its streets - possibly getting lost. This film is, in my opinion, grandiose in every possible facet. Even the screenplay is fine for a musical, if you are open to Demy's vision for the duration of the film. In addition, the dark side of life is not shunned, as witnessed by the subplot of the gruesome murder committed by Monsieur Dutrouz (pronounced phonetically exactly as the name of the criminal who thirty years later would turn Belgium upside down - a dirty connotation ). Fortunately, it is only a subplot and it is the inexhaustible love that is central to Les Demoiselles. Encore.
