Publisher Pierre Lachenay [Jean Desailly] earns a tidy sum with lectures at home and abroad, which often forces him to leave his wife [Nelly Benedetti] home alone for days. During a flight to Lisbon, he comes into contact with stewardess Nicole [Françoise Dorléac], with whom he starts an affair.

Simple basic plot that rises to great heights under the direction of François Truffaut - who worked with screenwriter Jean-Louis Richard for the first time. Truffaut was busy with his book about Hitchcock in 1964 and the hand of the master of suspense is palpable here in the way Truffaut manages to express the underlying tensions and related emotions of the main characters in a purely visual way.

Simple story that is worked out in a fascinating way. As a viewer, you almost feel the 'trial' that Jean Desailly and Françoise Dorléac undergo in Reims, the effort that Desailly has to make to get rid of the sticky organizer. Beautifully shot, nice score, great dialogues. The perfect adultery film as far as I'm concerned. I found the ending quite brutal, but apparently this film is based on true events.

Watched it for the third time, and it strikes me more and more how many subtleties this film contains. I don't think it can be removed from my top 10 for the time being...
