A fast-paced, chaotic film that darts back and forth through all sorts of timelines, is chock-full of film references, is full of precocious high school teenagers with witty one-liners and even has a real killer in its possession, but despite this wealth of ingredients, falls far short on both the comedy and horror fronts.

It's a lot, and it's fast-paced. Initially, you're a bit confused, and the film is impressive. After the overwhelming opening, in keeping with the fast-paced nature of the film, you quickly pierce through the confusing and absurd facade, returning to your own basic clarity. Important questions arise. What on earth is this about? Is this funny or not? Horror? The answers are, in order: nothing, sometimes, and sometimes.

The film contains a few successful comedic scenes and funny references to movies and movie characters. There's hardly any horror, but a few blood-spewing moments are both horrific and comical.

Not a great film. It starts off overwhelming. Then a single scene and a single moment evoke something comical and horrific from the chaos. And that's it.

Hidden gem.

I'm usually not a fan of self-aware, reference-heavy comedy, but this is a different kettle of fish. Kahn adds an extra layer of self-awareness, making it a truly freaky and over-the-top blend of comedy and horror. You don't often find films as crazy as these.

It's a bit of a shame about the dull American high school setting; it can't even make this film truly enjoyable, but it's still quite enjoyable. The story is a series of wacky scenes, weird ideas, and a kind of anything-goes atmosphere that doesn't disappoint. It's certainly quite unpredictable and consistently enjoyable.

Kahn's direction is also commendable, as it's completely in line with the rest of the film. That this doesn't appeal to a wide audience isn't surprising in itself, but this average is truly ridiculous, of course. Oh well, anyone wondering why we're inundated with so much cheesy junk and easy franchises...

3.5*

I liked the remake considerably better, especially because this time I knew what to expect. Director Joseph Kahn may be dealing with chaotic content, but he ultimately crafts it into something uniquely his own. A smoothly flowing, jam-packed story with countless references and visual highlights, making it very difficult to bore the viewer. Naturally aimed at the so-called ADHD generation, it delivers plenty of humor, graphic violence, and pace. The acting works well in between, though Kahn could have taken more time to properly develop the characters. The needlessly complex direction in the last half hour certainly wasn't necessary, but a more than satisfactory grade is definitely in order.
