Pretty fun, this Australian horror.

Although story bends and events sometimes seem a bit improbable, the film still has an oppressive and uncomfortable effect. And, because the focus in the story is very much on the characters, they are mainly responsible for evoking those feelings. Without empathy, no oppression and discomfort.

Since the skeptical gaze is certainly triggered at certain events, but also disappears surprisingly quickly to focus on all kinds of repulsive scenes again, the acting performances are believable and good and empathy is apparently the order of the day. Good thing, too.

A crazy plot calls for crazy characters. So there are. Father and daughter take the cake from a psychopathic point of view. Their degree of madness subtly and incrementally becomes clearer and more terrifying in each successive scene. They are haunting scenes. They are horrific scenes. Much is suggestive, but the shocking impact is no less intense than is the case with explicit horror. Father and daughter are scary.

The other characters are especially strangely phlegmatic. Initially, this behavior evokes aloofness and impassiveness. In the course of time, other emotions seep through these outer shields more emphatically. Anger, fear, pleasure and frustration are increasingly visible under the skin. And so the viewer's empathic ability goes to work unnoticed.

It has been filmed nicely. Few side issues besides the central issues. No major effects, little distracting theater or other spectacular fireworks. Sober is effective.

The score is nice.

“Bring the hammer, Daddy.”

Wonderful horror movie. The Loved Ones is pulpy, and you have to love that strange and absurd atmosphere. But I had a great time. Nice and bloody and exciting, but also with the well-known teenage problems.

Sean Byrne's directing is strong, and he manages to deliver an effective and impressive film with few resources. With strong camera work and acting. Especially McLeavy as a timid girl, who slowly turns into a mad and murderous femme fatale, is fantastic. But all the other actors are also doing very well. The Loved Ones shows that you don't need much to deliver a chilling horror film.

In terms of background, it is of course very vague and the premise is quite simply worked out. Still, I think the film doesn't really need this and you can see that in the scores. The tortures are quite psychopathic, almost incestuous, cannibalistic, brutal, raw, gruesome. I think the comparisons with Saw are very warped, Saw has a completely different concept. Hostel certainly belongs to the torture genre but is also significantly different in atmosphere and cinematically. No, I think this movie stands alone. Australia shows once again that they can make top horror.
