Director Martha Coolidge opens up a can of clichés in this saltless teenage film about a romance between young people from different social backgrounds. A film that skips along the expected benchmarks to its predictable conclusion. Mediocre.

PS The hippies on the poster have no relation to the content of the film.

Music and girls

I wouldn't call it a high school film, as the film does not take place in schools at all, but next to them. I think it's more of a chick flick. Nevertheless, an interesting video to watch, as the 80s culture comes to the fore. You can see that it is a film at the crossroads of the puritan 70s and the more free-spirited 80s. Subcultures are emerging (here punk), the sexual revolution is raging and differences in social class also play a role. Although the story hardly means anything, the prominent music and the rather stupid love story give a strong atmosphere to the whole. I wonder what Cage himself thinks when he sees himself in this. Furthermore, Frederic Forrest (best known to me as the pushy Nazi from Falling Down with Michael Douglas) struck me here as the hippie father of the chick. As mentioned, also a nice soundtrack with music from Psychedelic Furs, Men at Work, Eddie Grant, among others. It's not all that grand, but it is a nice trip down memory lane.

An early role for Nicholas Cage, although he fails to breathe much life into this superficial, formulaic teen flick. He plays the tough outsider with whom Julie [Deborah Foreman], the 'Valley Girl' of the title, falls in love. Her friends don't like it and blah blah blah. A lot of extremely mediocre 80s pop from (rightly) completely forgotten bands, so this really is an extremely dated relic. Fortunately, Foreman is very charming in the leading role and Colleen Camp and Frederic Forrest are entertaining as her parents, typical exponents of the Woodstock generation, but it all means very little.
