It's a shame that Stamm doesn't mess up the final, well, because it may well be there, but it doesn't get anything more out of it. An excellent opportunity to deeply immerse your film, your cast and your viewers in a screeching nightmare. This one is over too soon. He has done the best for that. The documentary style keeps it pretty natural, Cotton is a nice guy and if he messes things up before and during that ban, that's pretty funny.

After that, Stamm appears to have a nice script that keeps you busy about what exactly is wrong with that girl. It's neat how certain facets of religion have been incorporated into it and it still has a sharp and brave bend in store. For that bouncer, a few creepy creaky scenes that you can expect here, although they never quite live up to the poster. Partly because of that, the final should have lasted a little longer.

Not brilliant.

At the beginning of the film I was surprised by the way of directing. A classic example of going into the film blank and being surprised. For example, the film turned out to have been filmed as a documentary, and that belongs to the kind of film that can easily score with me. Unfortunately that is not the case here.

This is mainly due to the fact that Stamm himself does not really seem to be able to decide between a regular horror film and a faux documentary, which means that this film is always somewhere in between. It's too much of a regular horror movie to be a faux-doc and too much of a documentary to be a full-blooded horror movie. This imbalance breaks through early on.

Furthermore, the film overflows with jumpscares and loud noises, making it even less to be taken seriously as a docuhorror. The acting is again quite good. Jones proves early on to be a good and special actor and Bell also does quite well in her role. Fabian is a little more normal, but that was to be expected.

Unfortunately, the film is never optimally interesting due to the unbalanced flow that hangs through it. However, it does have the necessary shocking images that even managed to amaze me for a while, but it also lacks the supporting tension and threat. It now dissolves a bit too much by means of loud noises, and does not have an ounce of atmosphere.

It doesn't take too long and I was happy about that, but it could have been much more unique and special. Stamm is aiming a bit too much for reaction at the moment, and with that throws down all attempts to create an atmospheric whole. Sometimes surprising, as a whole somewhat reserved, so that as a whole it never comes out quite well.

The first half hour is very good. The tone is ironic. The camera work is dynamic. The movie is moving. The exorcism is intriguing. The acting is excellent. Patrick Fabian as the charismatic exorcist is especially great. In that half hour, the film builds on a dense, oppressive atmosphere with room for ironic clarifications. The beginning is a great set up to ridicule religious fanaticism. And that works very well.

Then the film loses its momentum. The freshness fades. The story becomes a bit of a repetition of moves. Yet the film does not completely sink into rut and dullness. This is ensured by some experienced but effectively placed shock moments plus the question of whether or not the possession has a supernatural origin. It is these elements that always stimulate just enough to hold the attention.

The Last Exorcism is a very decent movie. It is found footage that is not too loaded with clichés and even manages to ironically criticize fanaticism. If at the end the film still lapses into clichéd shaking with the camera, that is disappointing. Nevertheless, The Last Exorcist convinces across the board with a creative storyline, good acting and a nice dark atmosphere with room for ridicule.
