Sad.

Hellraiser has to be just about the most cynical (living) film series. Every few years a sequel is released, not because they really want to make a new Hellraiser, but because they retain the rights to the series. That is clearly visible.

It no longer has much to do with the original. Pinhead, teeth, a few chains and "the box" are mentioned briefly, but otherwise a lot of extra junk has been embroidered around it, which mainly detracts from the original. The whole setup is laughable at the beginning, but the fact that Pinhead ultimately loses out to such stupid trees in a white jacket is completely character assassination.

In between, it is mainly about a police investigation into some serial killer. Two terrible actors, a twist that no one wants and some very bad dialogue only further underline how low this series has sunk. I think it started to bother Tunnicliffe too, because every now and then we get a random shot of Pinhead sitting in a chair, just to remind people that this is a Hellraiser movie.

In terms of direction it is also really cringeworthy. Poorly shot, the gore is very cheap and the soundtrack is indebted to better horror films. The budget may not have been too high, which was not a valid reason given the lack of talent in this production. With half a million and some talented film, you can make a film that turns this nonsense into firewood.

The reboot of the original just doesn't happen, despite the fact that almost all interesting horror directors of the last 10 years have already been linked to that project. But people want to give the green light to this kind of bizarre rubbish. Oh no, this doesn't deserve a notch more than the very lowest.

0.5*

After the monstrosity Hellraiser: Revelations (2011), this is actually not that bad. In fact; there are some fantastic scenes in it. That opening alone was enough for me not to struggle through the uninspired detective story with too much difficulty. However, I still hope (of course) that Doug Bradley will be allowed to put on the make-up one last time for a real Hellraiser film, but such a franchise will not be snatched from the clutches of the current studio any time soon. For the time being we will have to make do with additions of this level.

Compared to the previous parts, this is quite a nice film. The story doesn't amount to much, but it's still enjoyable. The opening in particular is great and makes you forgive the rest of the film. After fifteen minutes the film also deteriorates considerably, but because of the first scenes you only realize this towards the end. The ending is somewhat disappointing and unfortunately does not save the film. The acting is otherwise mediocre. The special effects are okay. It starts hopefully, but ultimately disappoints somewhat. 2.5
