Gummo plot

"Prepare to visit a town you'd never want to call home."

The story is set in Xenia, a small, deadly dull Ohio town. The film follows a number of fringe characters, including Solomon, a skinny 14-year-old whose mother is as confused as it is abusive. His best friend, 19-year-old Tummler, lives with a holistic father who has long since lost his authority and has never recovered from the death of Tummler's mother. The two friends spend their days sniffing glue, killing stray cats for money and playing mischief and worse pranks. Moral sense is foreign to them.

Gummo hit me like a bomb. But I found it very difficult to understand why, because what to do with so many almost isolated scenes about physically or mentally deviant people? Together they form a poignant portrait of a small town in America, but so what? I don't see the relevance of that.

After much thought, I think it's mainly in the way those people are portrayed. Almost all scenes have a strong visual impact, are a kind of work of art in themselves. To me, Gummo is a cinematic work of art in its own right: uncompromising, disturbing, but above all touching and moving.

Meh, not really all that special. I expected a bit more in terms of weirdness. Every now and then you see such a funny, short sketch, but in general it is all rather boring and superficial. I especially lacked a heart, meaning and emotional connection with the characters. 2.5*
