A slow, calm but oh so heartfelt film. It takes a while to get into the movie. That carabiniere doesn't seem like much, but apparently that's part of the role. Gradually, the three introverted characters open up and you are right in the middle of the film. This is thanks to the slow build-up in the beginning of the film. It's nice how the trust between the carabiniere and the children grows systematically and the man evolves from someone who does his job to someone who is genuinely concerned with children and takes care of them. The children also go along with this, but are repeatedly confronted with passers-by who, like the carabiniere probably in the beginning, do not see them as children but 'that girl from the newspaper'.

Gradually it was just enjoying and watching happy people who have found happiness. Until they are unexpectedly put on the ground again. Or is there still hope and has the whole journey made its contribution...?

Beautiful film that may have a somewhat simple story and certainly does not excel in visual cinema, but can rely on strong acting performances and where you as a viewer (for those who want to) can see the gem in this print.

Amelio takes the time to let the three completely different characters slowly but surely grow together and develop a special bond. The protagonists know how to fill this in in an excellent way, resulting in an admittedly slow, but fascinating and above all honest film. Italian cinema at its best.

Visually it all looks rather bare and dry, but it also emphasizes

on the emotions of the three protagonists. The scene on the beach is the breaking point in the film

when the two unruly children with a rosy past finally find a

a bit of relief or even blossom, and there is more room for warmth with also

more confidence in the also rather young carabiniere, who is also distant or occasionally

even grumpy.

A moving and completely honest film with a pleasantly calm course, and excellent acting

of both children but especially of Enrico Lo Verso, with growing sympathy for all three

characters.
